Would this bring an end to Singapore as we know it?

A quick look through a couple of fourms would seem to imply that this would be the case according to the folk posting.

a day off is the law.

But that doesn't of course mean they get it.

It's not the law, well at least not weekly.

It has been suggested that the govt consider legislation to give domestic helpers a rest day once a week. That's why there is suddenly so much comment, much of it against from what I can see.

LOL that just means they will have get up at 4am and go to bed at 1am to make up for the lost hours over the day off.

No it is the law.

I thought MS posted the statute on this that directs the hours and days (and days off) that a servant must be given.

I see that there is an obligation in statute re: a rest day. But that the Employment Act does not apply to FDW! It must have been someone mis-applying it previously that threw me off-trail.

The masters seem to think they would die without a domestic helper because taking care of their own kids for 1 day will be such a chore.

Plus they can see the future.. the FDW will fall into bad company and get pregnant if they get a day off.

Thats what I couldnt understand from a lot of the postings I read, it appeared that most were lamenting the fact that they would have to look after their children themselves.
Its a very odd mindset that they have.

It starts very early. We almost had to fight to have our just (than) born son with us in the hospital room (single occupancy). M'am, you do not want to rest? Looked at as like freaks that we preferred to have the baby with as not in the common room where 20 or so of the other newborns were happily crying together.

May be they follow the Ferber method

Sounds more like it goes hand in hand with the whole 'confinement' thing. The idea that a mother is incapable of doing anything for herself and must rest for a month after giving birth.

Confinement thing is a bit voo-doo so hard to judge but I agree it could be a part of the whole package.

Where do I sign up for mom's not doing anything for the first month? I'll just nurse and sleep, thanks. But leave the baby with me! you may change it's diaper. LOL that's the life!
