Dear all, I hope you can help me with a quick question: do you give your maid a food allowance per week, and if so, what is a reasonable sum?

I was talking with our maid last week and she expressed a desire to purchase some of her own food, especially snacks and drinks which she does not feel comfortable taking from our cupboard.

I post a menu each week, for my kids. But that way she can see if there are things she won't want.

Though, mostly she eats what we eat. Usually the only time she doesnt is when the kids are having somethign on a date night, like pancakes.

One of her friends had given her noodles and I saw her heating those up on a date night and told her to add it to the grocery list so I could get her some. But even so, a month later she still has several packages left.

she makes the grocery list for me, as we run out of stuff. So whenever she watns something I tell her to just add it.

I guess that doesn't really help you much. All that to say, maybe she could just add it to your list.

Our maid eats what we eat...no food allowance.
If she dont like it then she is free to cook herself something else...
Sorry for being a bit cynical, but some of them are not the most honest people you come across....so give them extra money at your own peril...then watch them eat your food also.....the last one we had was taking food/drink/washing powder out of the house on a nightly basis to help her boyfriend's weekly outgoings!

Our does grocery shopping for basics and I told her to feel free to buy whatever she feels like. As long as bills are not extraordinary large I'm not concerned. I did tell her couple times that it'd be good for her to go easy on her ethnic junk food but that's about it. If she wants to have clogged arteries at 50, it's her choice.

This however only works after you have established some ground rules and confirmed whether she is an ok person. Not all of people are decent/mature/have head screwed on right and that goes for maids too.
