Singapore Expats

Could someone give me an accurate idea of how much monthly groceries could cost for a young family of 5? (parents, children ages 10, 7 and 2) Many thanks.

How accurate do you want it?
There are people living on S$600 and others on S$25000. The amount they spend on groceries is very different. Google for cost of living surveys and figure out the factor between your home country and Singapore, then multiply that with what you currently spend. This will still be much off, but you can't get any closer now.

It would be pretty much the same as anywhere else in a world for supermarket goods albeit with a 10-30% markup for western foods and 50-100% markup for alcoholic beverages..

That is what I found at least.. Alternate is to shop at a wet market where fruit and veg are more locally priced that is maybe 30% cheaper than the west...

I can tell you what I spend: about 1200-1400 a month. Gasp!

We have a large family and a maid; 5 kids: 13, 12, 5, 3, 18 months.

We buy largely organic and natural products. And lots and lots of snacks. My kids have at least 2 snacks a day, plus meals, and lots of bread and milk.

Also, included in that range is household products like cleaners and detergent, but not diapers.

I do try to find cheaper prices, but not if it affects teh quality. And I always prefer organic over others. That DEFINITELY increases the prices.

This DOES NOT include eating out.

We are 6, shop at a mixture of wet market and cold storage/ntuc and the monthly bill is rarely below 1000. Kind of in line with the previous poster, though we don't worry about organic much.

Hi, try this if you have an hour to spare, just visit the online stores (google fairprice or cold storage online singapore) and fill up a cart of your regular groceries. This will give you a ballpark of what you'll be spending on.

If you are eating "western" and shopping at cold storage, and drink fresh milk, then I would say 1200 - 1500 per month.

But going onto Cold Storage online and filling up a virtual cart is the best way to find out, I agree.
