Singapore Expats

There used to be criticism of services in SG back in the 90s that they 'love-bombed' the customer. In other words they unthinkingly showered the customer in a way that often left you feeling rather bemused.

Changi this week struck me as doing this, and it is a new thing.

I recall reading a crit of Changi vs HK, when HK took the laurels for best airport in the world (a few years ago). Changi seem to have taken this to heart and are now seeking to mirror it.

Noticeable differences are people who actively approach you and ask if they can help, if you're standing there for a minute looking puzzled. I think this is a positive. [Side-note: not very Asian is it, sidling up to someone and offering help].

The other thing which worked less well IMO, and to me was a bit weird. Gushing young people rushing around thrusting wicker baskets of sweets at you. Do they do this at HK too?

p.s. The airside sports bar charging $20 for a small glass of wine ... is having a laugh isn't it?

Not? This is what annoys me most in the shops. Like a plague.
It's a different thing if someone offers me some help because he/she was told to do so (very Asian thing) and if a stranger just do it voluntarily out of any commercial context.

I think that's why it interests me, as it is so obviously 'spray-on customer services' with the motive of getting the #1 airport ranking back.

But I'm ok airport staff approaching me and asking if I need help. If I look like I need it I probably do.

Have to agree with SMS.. while generalizing Asians as a whole may not be the correct thing to do, you would do better to provide a reasoned argument rather than a sarcastic response to every thread you disagree with...

Huh? I do agree with him because he is intelligent and his observations are always so accurate. I learn a lot from intelligent foreign workers like him.

If you disagree you can reason with him yourself, why ask me to do that? I am sure you cannot find any reasons to argue otherwise. Please keep your feedbacks coming JR, they mean a lot to S'poreans like me and we learn a lot from foreign workers like you.

Was flying through WRO lately on a domestic flight to WAW, and in the lounge there was this typical airline/airport-typish, very industry-like magazine with an article about Changi and how it's the #1 airport in the world for all the various reasons.

Have to say I agree with this assessment - Changi is a joy to use and the best airport to have as your home hub. Only place in the world where from the moment I opened the taxi door to the time I passed through passport control (including normal check-in with luggage before that) my watch only registered 4 minutes passing....
