Singapore Expats

I have been told that I require "Colposcopy" because something in my pap smear test did not look right? Can I go to any gynecologist for colposcopy? Or are there specific doctors with colposcopy equipment?

This is a common procedure -- just call a regular GYN office to make sure they offer the service. (Some offices just do basic testing and not follow-ups but just to refer to a specialists.. why waste time with a limited service office?)

make sure you don't get sucked into the hard sell that some GYNs singapore enjoy making... there're lots of stuff you may not need that they may recommend you buy.

Taxico, what are you writing about? OP has bad PAP smear, colposcopy is a standard (and appropriate) follow up procedure. One don't have to "buy" anything to have it done. You pay for the work done and materials used. Full stop.

Petrov, yes, to do colposcopy they need to have special equipment; sterile room (not the usual place where you have checkups), ultrasound and some other "small" tools. It's short procedure, may be painful, but this is the right thing to do. I've got it couple of years ago in one of the private clinics in Mt. E. and IIRC I have paid around $700 for everything, including follow up visit.

from my experience an abnormal pap smear reading may not always be bad news. thus the results from a colposcopy may also not be bad news and follow up visits are not always unnecessary.

but like most patients, most women freeze and freak (especially locals) and always do what they're told - some GYNs have been known to hawk supplements as "cures."

the procedure is always uncomfortable - not "may be painful."

Of course that abnormal PAP smear is not a verdict straight away, but it is an indicator that a follow up should be done. What will happen later (after the colposcopy) that's another story.

Hi there Petrov, I did mine for under $500. Try to find a gynecologist who already owns a colposcope, which I found out is not always the case. Some gynecologists bring you to another part of the hospital and use a shared colposcope which the doctor has to pay a fee each time they use it.

FYI, $500 is a lot to pay, even if it includes a consult.

Taxico, what would be a reasonable price? Will one be shortchanged in terms of how it is done, or the brand of test used if the price quoted is lower?
