Singapore Expats

Hi,
I am applying to study abroad at Nanyang Technological University. I was wild in early years and received two DWI's and one possession of marijuana charge...I understand Singapore is quite strict on these issues. I am wondering if you all can provide feedback regarding if NTU will deny my application for admission? I understand you all are not NTU personnel but you know the culture much better than I do and I am curious the general disposition of the society on a whole regarding the above matters. It is my understanding the government of Singapore will allow me to study there because the crimes are not heinous. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Not sure what your question is. Is it a) will you get a student visa; or b) will you fit into the society?

I think you have two issues to look at:

- What is asked on the NTU application form?
- What is asked on a Student visa application form?

The NTU fOrm asks what criminal offenses you've encountered. My questions is: what is Singapore's general view of people that have a past record? Tha k you for the link Carteki. I actually do not drink or drug anymore. JRT - thank you for the reminder to switch my handle.

It depends on the kind of offence you have committed, just like in any country.

If you have a record because of drunk driving etc - it will be fine.

If you have a record because of a serious offence like arson, rape, burglary, you will be looked upon with disdain and suspicion.

I don't think its different from anywhere else really. I don't think Singaporeans will treat anyone differently just because they have a record for DUI, underage drinking or some sh*t like that.

Regarding 'soft drugs' like weed - younger Singaporeans will be open minded especially those who have been abroad. But the older ones, especially the 'establishment' types from the university admin, they might regard that as a sort of stigma.

Even if NTU accepts the prior convictions, you may still have a hurdle to cross when applying for a student visa. This is because the ICA does take a serious view against prior offences, especially drug offences. I know of people who were denied work permits because of this reason.
