Singapore Expats

Hi everyone

As many before me, I have just arrived in Singapore and I am deciding what area to stay in. I have read quite a bit of stories about how crowded the MRT can get but not the exact information I am looking for. Therefore I was wondering whether any of you could help me out by answering following questions:

- At what time does the MRT get really crowded in the morning ? (for arrival at Raffles Place)

- On the NS (red) line towards Raffles, at which stations do most people get on/off ?

- Same question for the EW (green) line, both coming from Changi and Jurong East.

I sometimes get the green line from Paya Lebar to City Hall and then change to Somerset - about 7.45am it's very busy. People mainly start getting off around Bugis and I guess by the time it has gone through the CBD it gets emptier. Same coming out, people start getting off around Kallang/Aljuned. Interchange stations are usually busier too.

They nearly always seem to be busy though, unless you're thinking of travelling into work at 6.30am you're going to be standing most of the way.

Can anyone share his/her experience on the red line morning commute into the CBD ?

You get on it at one end or somewhere along the line and you get off at your destination.

For crying out loud, you can cross the entire country long-ways on the MRT in 45 minutes.

SMS, sometimes I feel like you post on every thread just for sake of posting. OP asked a reasonable question and BigSis provided meaningful experience.

You on the other hand spew the typical generic responses I see over and over on the board about how small Singapore is, how it's less than an hour from one end to the other end and etc without providing any meaning response (IMHO).

I realize it must get old for you old hands to see repetitive questions on the forum but for few months I have been on the board, observing, it gets old to read the same BS replies from few same people.

I've already looked for "Ignore Users" feature available on other forums but don't see that functionality on this board.

Hi, it's a tough question. I actually found a chartered shuttle bus that drops me off at my work at 7:40am--I board the shuttle around 7:15am. It is a blessing since the mrt starts getting busy right around 7:20 or so on the red line. I get on at Clementi and off at Outram Park.

I do come home on the MRT and try to leave the office by 5:45 since then I can not be squished. On Fridays I leave by 5:30 and can sometimes actually get a seat! Yep, that always makes my day. The trains ae usually running every 3 minutes or so at that point. I've found Dover station can actually have a crush of students from SingPoly which makes getting off at Clementi hard--but I've gotten used to telling students they have to get off the train to let me off too.

Good luck--take it for about a week and you'll usually find the timings which work for you.
