(To pre-empt the 'I've got 30 posts and that is outrageous, you bring this forum down' onslaught, we have loadsa friends who are crew, and ALL the men are gay, whether they look it or not to the casual eye)

Doubtful all male flight attendants are gay (your friend's anecdotal 'evidence' aside). Plus, who really cares?

Well not all but it is a growing number. On the bright side, at least they add colour to the traditionally 'womanising' cabin crew

Not all, Delia. I have a few mates who are happily married and are still cabin crew.

I agree with the lynx, they do bring colour to the proceedings and are generally very good on the service side of things and also with the banter - especially if you pinch their arse when they are up and down the cabin!

I'd rather have a gay flight attendant looking after me as opposed to the miserable, swamp monsters that BA use - whom make you feel that it's really audacious of you to ask for anything mid-flight outside of trolley service.

Swamp monsters, lol. The one time I flew with BA the cabin crew were on strike so my flight was served by pilots who graciously stepped in to help (I'm sure for some good $$). They were the best looking, best dressed and most helpful group of attendants I've experienced outside of Korean Air. Gotta love a man (or several) in uniform

(and I doubt any of them were gay, but that's not really what you were talki g about.)

Completely agree, last time I went long haul with BA the service was so poor that I vowed I would never fly with them again (other than an emergency, or if i'm not paying).

Alright then I shall rephrase my OP. Why is it that most male cabin crew are homosexual?

It is a genuine question I pondered yesterday, arising from a gay cabin crew friend's latest relationship status. I was trying to think of a job-role that attracts such a high proportion of gay men in a non-gay environment (i.e. not working in a gay club etc). But I couldn't.

I'm not questioning that they are good at their job. The suggestion they are good at it because they are gay is an interesting one. Do airlines positively discriminate towards gay men as a result I wonder? Should there be a lobby group for heterosexual crew to fight discrimination?

Regarding the term 'adding colour', again I agree. But then why is it seemingly only in this single job-role that we value this colour being added, and would not wish for it or perhaps tolerate it in most others?

It might be airline specific. I hadn't noticed it until I flew with Qantas in 2005.

Maybe it's simply preference of the employee?

To be fair, I've never wanted to be cabin crew (they'd need to widen the aisles somewhat for me!).

Maybe it's due to the depiction that the job is "glamorous" and mainly women and gay men want to be glamorous? I don't know many straight men (aside from Bunter) that seem to want to be glamorous...

I agree though, never met a flight attendance who wasn't camp at least (who knows they may be straight and camp)

I guess they are more feminine in many social and psychological aspects than an ordinary male and this profession is dominated by the females. It starts from getting along with the job itself typically seen by the males as not a job for the real male, and ending with increased demand in social interactions sensitivity the typical males often give no *beep* about or are completely oblivious to it.

I reckon the other job description which probably is right up there with male flight attendants would be male hairdressers! (not be be confused with male barbers)
