Singapore Expats

Hi

We are moving from Sydney to Singapore along with a container-load of our stuff ..costs taken care of by the company.

Planning to go for un-furnished/semi-furnished condo.

Are the following fairly standard in Singapore condos. We are not sure whether to get them along or sell them here in Sydney.
1) Fridge
2) Washing Machine
3) Dishwasher

Voltage is the same as here.

Your suggestions would be most appreciated.

Standard in most condos are Fridge, cooker not always an oven, washing machine and we asked for a dryer.
Not many kitchens have space for a dish washer but if the kitchen is suitable you could ask for one. Some of my friends have a dish washer.

Most people think a live in helper is the dish washer.

So if an apartment does not have them, then we can ask the owner to get them installed for us ?

Yeah, I also heard that dishwashers are generally not installed and easier to hire a help.

Also where do people keep their bikes? Is there a separate common bike rack in the basement ? Don't want to store them in the balcony

Your appliances plug will be an issue as SG is using UK T type plug

Come on MS.... changing plugs is simple. I was routinely doing similar at lord knows age 6-7 on (that's when I wasn't making explosives, casting my own lead bullets, and otherwise 'delinquent activities'

p.s. Though gotta say some things I do and my wife is totally goggle eyed. One of them is changing plugs. Jeez... should see her when I take the top off a toilet cistern or rod a drain lol...

It is a sort of standard for the furnished including partly furnished units but NOT for the unfurnished ones. Last two unfurnished places we rented had built-in stoves only.

You can ask and further negotiate

Yes it is simple. I do agree but most OZ appliances has a different rating and most of the plugs are encapsulated hence the only way it is to chopped the front bit and fixed the new T type plug.
Other way is the get a multiple plug with OZ/NZ to UK T plug converter
50/60 hz rating in SG but some appliance in OZ only uses either 50 or 60 hz which can either slow down the speed or increase it

Some do, some don't. You gotta ask.

And even if they do, there might not always be space for your bike.

I've got a friend who lives in a miniscule condo in Siglap, and his has a common bike rack next to the carpark. But it's almost always full, so he usually puts his bike in his balcony.

However, if you chose to live in a HDB flat, there'll almost certainly be a large bike rack on the ground floor of the block. Most HDB blocks have them. Mine does.

If you live in an HDB you would be a fool to park a good bike in the void deck facilities. The seats and anything else easily removable will be gone inside of a week (if it lasts a day). I see all the remains of locked up bikes in our HDB estate on my walkabouts with the constabulary every month.

Oh, I thought it is Aussies and DIY don't mix .. as everything must be done by a certified this person or another .. or so I am told ..

I know enough and more of the Singaporean friends who are more than adept at DIY !!!

What are the rules the bikes that are no longer complete but still chained up?

How long does the residents committee give it until they get the bolt cutters out and get rid of them?

The bike racks around my block are 50% full of bikes with bits missing/flat tyres etc.

And seriously, when I see bikes minus seats / wheels, well, that's what deters me from getting my own .. and later find out somebody has removed parts

For the most - I was told it is kids with too much time in their hands, and wouldn't a CCTV setup stop such stuff ??

since we have gone on to discuss petty thievery and robbery, I thought I should add in my 2 cents too .. for the betterment of humanity .. LOL

Must be just HDB lah, my kids bikes have been in the basement of our condo for over a year unlocked an no one has touched them!
