Singapore Expats

Hi,
Just landed in Singapore and after trying some bakeries I haven't found a really good one in the city. I miss some good grains bread for breakfast and baget for dinner. Love good quality bread that could hold at least 2 days in the fridge. Please let me know if someone would know a place to suggest.

Bread here tends to be not so good, the cheese shop in HV has good french baguettes but at a price and Carrefour does acceptable bread, not brilliant, but certainly acceptable!

Cedele does some nice bread - some people rave about Werner's Bakery on Upper East coast rd but it's only good really if you live nearby - not worth the journey if not - if you live further away there is probably a Cedele near you that does similar bread.

Carrefour has gone downhill with their bread IMHO - definitely not as much choice as there used to be. Marche does some lovely bread but only really worth it if you live/work near their branch in Somerset (I'm not sure if their Vivo branch sells bread).

Surprisingly OK for bread is Giant who now bake their own -some of the things like hamburger/hotdog buns aren't so good (too sweet tasting for me - sugar is a preservative often used in bread here), but the baguettes and ciabattas are nice and much cheaper than you'd pay at any of the places mentioned above. I buy in bulk and freeze for packed lunches.

Four Leaves baguettes are OK.

Yamazaki do a nice baguette and batard.

Swiss bake have reasonable breads as well. Choupinette (Bt Timah area) serves good croissants. Paul is opening up in Takashimaya but the last I check, its still renovating.

Personally, I would never recommend going to these two for bread. Quality is already one matter, the hygiene is *shakes head*. If only you have seen what I saw in one of those places...

Marche above Sommerset MRT has decent bread for sale in a little booth. We mostly got around the lack of bread problem by baking ourselves though.

A bit out of the way, but great bread.

Angela, there is a bakery just outside Whampoa market, Kim Keat Lane/Close, where you can buy fresh baked bread. Mostly white loaves, or small items. Cant remember seeing a Grain one. Small short loaf $1.50 (about 3/4 different shapes). Worst case, if you havent been to the area, just go have a look, grap a $5 feed at the market (chicken rice, laksa, satay sticks are simple and good), Wet market in morning, food stalls at lunch and late. Have a look around, and walk up along Balestier Rd. Shaw Plaza is close as well for Maccas or KFC as backup.

Just tried a place at the bottom of Scott sq, has a fancy French name and was a bit surprised all the staff spoke Japanese. It turns out its a Japanese bakery. I was a bit worried bread from the land of soft sweet plastic bread. Very impressed by the loaf, kept going back to tear another piece off. I ate the whole loaf in about 15 mins!
