Hi,

I'd like to know what do you usually give to local kindergarten school teachers for Chinese New Year? I didn't give anything for Christmas as it was school holidays and plan to give something for CNY. Thanks for sharing.

Probably a crate of oranges? That's what my suppliers give me...

I think that's the minimum you should give to anyone at CNY, otherwise, buy them an orange tree!

On another note, you can give them typical CNY goodies such as bak kwa or those CNY cookies/munchies like pineapple tart, chicken floss roll, kueh bangket etc...

If the school has Muslim helper or teacher, don't give bak kwa as most of the bak kwa is pork.

I heard that it should never be 4, cause 4 sounds like death in Chinese? If this is not the case then fine, I'll stick to 2 or 6 though, I don't want to risk getting it wrong!

It's never a 4.
B'coz each person take 2 orange and pass to the house owner and say Happy Chinese New Year.

And no one take 6.
If you 1 person take 6 orange and pass to the house owner. It might turn out joke of the day.

I'm Local Chinese.

Each person take 2 oranges.. in chinese mean in pair. That is good number.

Just remember
If you are single, you visit people house. Bring 2 oranges.
If you are couple and both of you visit people house. Bring 4 oranges.
If you are married but only you , 1 person visit people house. Bring 2 oranges.

Children no need to bring oranges.
Children only go to people house to collect Ang Bao.

By the way, it is not a normal oranges.

It must be Mandarin orange

depend how deep is your packet.

range from $6 to as high as you wish.
But must be in even number.

Some people don't have deep packet, they put $4.

Some elder who are not working and don't have much money.. they might give $1.10 (I receive before.)

Only married couple can give Ang Bao.
If single.. regardless of age. No need to give.
But still can give to own niece or nephew, if they want.
Single also can collect ang bao from those who has married.

and when I worked for a "small' Company, my then boss always wanted to drink Guinness Beer, for Chinese New year .. and always in pairs ..

The pair thingy, I can understand

The Guinness beer - never figured out what Guinness had to do with CNY
