Singapore Expats

Dear all those-in-the-know:

I was just wondering:

(1) Is there a word Singaporean's would use for the truncated-word, which I have personally never liked, EXPAT?

and,

(2) What would be a better or more appropriate word, do-you-think?

[For example, Gaikokujin or gaijin is used in Japan]

PS: I suspect I will get a few funny replies on this one!!!

well there's a local dialect term for foreigners.... or whites.. called "ang moh" basically it means red haired.... its quite rude.... though pple might not meant to be rude by using that term....

basically if being polite... we normally call pple by their name.... and not by terms like expats... or watever...

Ang Moh is not a derogatory term. Its used to refer to caucasians and not neccessraily expats and done so in a rather affectionate way

Exactly - I have also been referred to the White Man in a not so nice context to my face in meetings here in Singapore...

What are you talking about?
In Japan, they call everyone "ALIENS".....like many other places. I think Expats and Foreigners or even "ang mo" sounds decent as far as I am concerned.

anyway buchanan... gaijin is a rude term ... as it means "strange people"...
gaikokujin sounds better...cos it means people from foreign country...

every race has its own degrading terms...
like its degrading when u call a chinese ..."chinkee" or chink
hong konger as "honkie"
blacks as "niggas"
malays as "mats"
indians as "kerlings"
japs as "perverts" ahahahaha...... ok just kidding with this one.....
no offense....hahaha

anyway we are all guilty in a way of degrading pple using names....one way or another..... yup yup...

Gaijin literally means "outside person". Fairly mild if you ask me, but then again, I have no problems with referring to myself as an ang moh kau or red-haired monkey, which is what ang moh is actually short for...
