Sausages

I'm sure anyone posting here from the UK is utterly horrified by the sausage options available here in Singapore. Every single one I have purchased from the supermarkets (Fairprice, Cold Storage, Gourmet Market) has been so bad that it's virtually inedible.

The only source of reasonable sausages I found was Huberts Butchers out on Dempsey Hill, but even those tend to be quite greasy when cooked (I grilled them) and not the best flavour wise.

Has anyone got any recommendations for places to buy good quality English bangers from? A cumberland sausage sandwich would go down an absolute storm right now, but I'm limited to bacon sandwiches due to the really poor choice available in Singapore.

I know the other butchers shops also offer sausages, so if you can recommend one that tastes good I'd appreciate it.

It seems that they truly do not make them like they do at home :)

I've pretty much given up finding good quality meat of any description here at any price - and I've resigned myself to the hotdog-esque local sausages (which I grill, and kid myself that they are hotdog franks such that I can eat them cheerfully).

That's disheartening - I thought there would be someone in Singapore that had sausages worth eating. Maybe I should start my own sausage importing emporium...

The best ones I've found are the Broad Oak ones that they ship over from the UK and usually have in the freezer dept at Cold Storage (never seen them at the other supermarkets, only ever at CS). They come and go though - they're out of stock at the moment in my local CS's and have been since Christmas.

They used to sell Saxby's but I haven't seen them for ages.

You can bring them in though next time you go home for a visit - Singapore's not too fussy about that. Friends from Aus especially are always getting frozen meat and bringing it back because it's so much cheaper over there. One of my friends comes back with half a sheep in her suitcase every time she goes to Perth :)

 A friend asked me to bring meat back for him last time I was in Aus, and I just laughed at him as I thought he was kidding. I didn't know people did that seriously :) Next time I head back, I'll freeze a whole Angus fillet and bring it back with me, excess baggage be damned :)

Yeah, I got my parents to bring me some sausages when they visited in December, but sadly they also thought I was kidding (or that they'd be jailed for contraband sausage import) and so I only got one pack :( - next time I visit Australia or the UK I'm bringing back a whole suitcase full and buying a new freezer.

check out the aussie butcher (literally called that) up at Holland Village.

he's got decent meat at fairly reasonable prices - more than cold storage etc. but the meat is way better. snags as well.

enjoy

Thanks for the tip :) More than happy to pay for quality.

The Aussie butcher's sausages are OK - they've got a new branch opening at Parkway parade for those among us who live in the East. I didn't used to buy from them very often because they were a long way from me but I might be able to now.

Yes bringing meat from elsewhere - have a look at the customs website - it's surprising how much stuff you can bring in. What people do is buy it from the butcher's frozen, wrap it up in newspapers and things and it stays frozen because the baggage hold isn't heated.

It failed a bit for us the Christmas before last - sis-in-law coming from the UK was instructed to bring pork pies, sausages, bacon - got stuck in that snow delay at Heathrow for about 5 days - luggage checked in and left standing on the tarmac in the snow. We fried up the sausages as soon as she arrived and lived to tell the tale :)

What you can also do is unwrap the sausages after purchase, and re-wrap them in 2's in clingfilm, and then rewrap in the original wrapper, then wrap that in a few sheets of newspaper and freeze. Pack them in amongst clothes at time of departure, and on arrival whack them straight into the freezer.

The beauty of the wrapping in 2's is that you can now savour a sausage sani now and again, without having to resort to using a hammer and screwdriver to split up a whole frozen packet.

p.s.Oh and p.s., I never found anything approaching Brit sausages in SG.

My old man recently brought over 10kg of fresh prime beef fillet from Aust. Unfrozen just in a cooler bag with a few ice packs in his hand luggage. Kept me going for awhile! Ill be doing the same thing when i head back for a few weeks soon.

I've been eyeing up the Aussie butcher in Holland Village for a while - they do delivery of meat, so you don't actually need to go there. But as mentioned, the sausages are expensive (about $15 for 6 I think) and I didn't want to buy them if they were the same quality as the ones from Huberts. That said, those ones were better than the godawful red things they sell in Fairprice... anyone who's enjoyed a chilli sausage in the UK beware! They're not anything like that here...

Off to Australia in a few weeks, so I'll be bringing back plenty of meat then. Having never been before - are aussie sausages good? Or would I be better off using the luggage space for beef and lamb (which is obscenely priced here in sg).

5kg per person

You are allowed 5kg per person from Aus, NZ, Argentina and one other place (I dont remember). Check the customs web site as recomended earlier.

Sausages will thaw in the flight so dont freeze them until you get here. Meat is best in a cryovac - any butcher will do it. I pack it in a cooler bag with a reusable "ice brick". meat will stay frozen but the outside may thaw so again, I dont freeze until getting to Singapore.
Check it in with standard luggage.

I've just asked my folks to bring some black pudding over from UK (I miss it so much!) They are getting it vac packed and I'll get them to stick it in a cool bag with an ice block in the hold luggage, should be fine, then I'll seperate, cut up into portions and freeze when they get here, I've heard people doing both options and none have died from it.

Also, the sausages in "The Butcher" in Parkway Parade are pretty good, we grabbed some for a BBQ over the weekend, much closer than travelling to HV for me!

nburge,

for some reason I just get a chuckle reading this thread talking about sausages with an advertisement in your signature for rapid weight loss. :o
