Singapore Expats

Im moving to Singapore a week today and i use quite a few sports supplements.

Two questions I guess,

where is the best place in Singapore to get these readily and at a good price or is it just the same and cheaper of the internet.

Secondly, the stuff I already have thats left is it really worth bringing it over with me. I cant be bothered with any questions at immigration if my bags are checked, which everytime I have ever been through I get asked. I must look dodgy or something.

I am aware of all the strict rules about certain supplements but mine are all just the standard maximuscle type products you can readily buy in most shops in the Uk. I take capsules which are maximuscle thermobol but they arent marked and just plain white tablets. I also have protein shake powder but i might just throw that away anyway to save on any hassle. I have protein bars left over which wont be a problem anyway i guess and finally Glucosomine tablets.

Its probably a really stupid question but i would rather ask a stupid question and get an obvious answer rather than get any hassle when i arrive.

Haha cheers. That was last year but either way I don't take them to get massive. Just maintain and it's after sports rather for recovery than after endlessly lifting weights. But yes I am a scrawny runt. Haha.

I don't do sports supplement but I know someone who does and it is legit business (I used to work across the hall from their warehouse entrance). They do delivery and you can also do pick-up from their warehouse. From the number of men I saw walking in and out of that door with boxes and bags every day, I think it is good.

mate my advice is to bring as many as you can with you. the prices here are ridiculous for exactly the same products you get at home. Ive found some at 400% more (BSN NO Xplod)... ive found it cheaper to order and get direct from the US. But when I go back to Aust I stock up.

Product range is very limited.

Google up fitlion and nutrifirst to get an idea.

Cheers for your replies, In that case then i will try to bring a load out with me to tide me over until I take a holiday back to the UK, even if it is just the tablets and bars. Will see how i get on with baggage weight anyway, limited to 40Kg so if i have enough i may bring some powder too.

Yeah I had a look at prices for the same stuff and was extortionate online. as long as there is no problem, just cant be bothered with any hassle or questions.

I can get stuff readily from the UK hopefully, my colleague I work with flys in to meet me from the UK, he could be my supplement mule if i ask him nicely.

if you think online is an extortion wait til you visit one of one 2 branded store (ok GNC) that exist in the realm of bricks and mortar.

stock up on bars, thats definately something no one has here in variety, quantity or price.

Punts, I used to buy stuff in dolphinfitness.co.uk when I lived in Dublin and I can't say that here prices are much more expensive. 5LBS of protein is about 70SGD - close to 35pounds I believe.

I use nutritionpark.com and fitlion.com

Both of them have roughly same prices but both have problems with bars stock sometimes + nutritionpark don't have meal replacement I buy sometimes

I'm not sure about prices for tablets as I use only protein, bars and sometimes meal replacement shakes.

Singapore is fairly similar to the UK in that you'll find a little of most things but not the massive variety of all things that can be found in the US. However, the only place to physically buy is GNC (EAS, MuscleTech, BSN, and Muscle Milk are main brands) with a few items at Watsons and Guardian pharmacists.

The most common brand in SG is GNC.I tried but personally i felt no effect,infact is quite harmful for me as im not those hardcore bodybuilder.

for small packaging such as pills or Jack3D, i will buy from bb.com as the postage is cheap for small botols.
For big jug of proteins, i buy from nutritionpark.com.

Do note that some ingredient such as Yohimbine is banned in Spore, so when u import supplements with such ingredients, u will need to fill up declaration form.

Tip 1: Avoid buying from shops, unless it's urgent.

Prices here are probably similar if not a little cheaper than the UK, but it's definitely much more expensive than some of the online stores. A lot of the local discounts and sales are based on marked up prices (i.e. GNC).

Tip 2: Buy Online

For almost everything, from Animal Pak to Lavender Essential Oils, I suggest you check out SGCheapSupplements. It's not a store, but it shows you where to buy with lots of price comparisons with local stores and even local sites like nutrifirst, babyonline and fitlion. People from UK, Japan, Malaysia and China follow their tips as well.

For Optimum Nutrition's Whey Protein though, get it from Nutrifirst, especially the bulk 10lb bags.

Tip 3: Keep orders below S$400 to avoid GST (If ordering from abroad)

Apart from DHEA, most (normal) supplements can be brought into the country. We're very fortunate that the import tax system here is very simple (I checked out UK's system, it's nuts!).

Anything above S$400 is subject to GST, anything below is safe.

Note the amount is based on the total amount including freight and insurance (if any).

So, a S$350 order with a shipping fee of S$40 for a total of S$390 will be safe.

An order of S$340 with a shipping fee of S$70 for a total of S$410 though, will be subject to prevailing GST rates.

There is a new company called The Gym Shack (www.gymshack.com), they are definitely the best priced in Singapore and have most of the top brands from the states. The are also located in Singapore so the shipping is very fast.
