Hey,

I'm planning to drive down to Malacca on a weekend.
Cabbing it down to JB and then renting a car from there? Does this makes sense or would it be better to rent a car from Singapore?

Yes this is a cheaper way. Mayflower Rentals is close by the Taxi Station in JB . reasonable and good car condition

It's faster to get to Melaka from Tuas really, but if you want to rent a car then Tuas is not as convenient.

Have you thought of getting a bus? it's really cheap to do it that way!

On another note, everything is within walking distance in Malacca. A'Famosa, Stadhuys, St Paul's Hill, Jonker Street, museums, Malacca river, and not to mention, the famous food like chicken rice balls, Nyonya pineapple tart, satay celup, cendol etc...

So you can consider to hop on a coach and take 4 hours there.

Oh and if you do go for coaches, my in laws and parents all used "Luxury coaches" at the recommendation of someone here, they are 30% dearer, but they said it was a lovely trip.

The ones you recommended at the time only went to KL but these guys were also recommended! (JR8 maybe?)

Makes perfect sense to me. All the crashed cars I see on the E2 have Singapore number plates. Malaysian number plates must increase your changes of arriving safely.

I've not been fond of driving to Malaysia because a) I'm not familiar with roads there, b) traffic police tend to suck (if you get stopped as it happened to me once).

My last trip to Malacca (with relatives) was in May and we rented a minivan from Singapore (with driver) - and the whole trip there and back went without any issues. The driver even gave use good suggestions about where to eat. And we did not have to worry about parking when we went to the town centre (some event was taking place so spaces were difficult to find) - he dropped us off and a couple of hours later we called him and he picked us up.
