Singapore Expats

Hello All,
I am planning to come to Singapore from the UK in June for about 6months. I am thinking of teaching English as a foreign language while I am there. Anyone have any experience of this and know which courses are the best to do in order to get one of these teaching jobs? How much do these jobs go for? Do the schools get work permit for teachers?

Highly unlikely.

* Everybody here speaks English (good English, on the other hand...)
* Six months? That's too short for the trouble of an employer going through the paperwork to get you in.
* Everybody here speaks English and locals have less paperwork to deal with and also does not hit foreigner-employed quotas and such.

That said, you could take a look at the British Council--you may get lucky.

I'd debate the highly unlikely part, lots of people are here to learn English. Most seem to come from the neighboring countries (vietnam, prc, etc) though, not quite the locals (even though they need it too). Although the six month thing will be your biggest hurdle. I'd suggest extending it.

I'll second British Council. I know someone who works there, they pay decently. They seem to focus on a lot of expats business people from non-English speaking areas, and especially their children. I also hear they pay more for foreign native English speakers than locals too.

I second the 6 month being too short and you maybe need to consider staying longer. It's not worth the trouble for the employment pass from the employer's perspective. From my experience, the minimum contract that is typical is 2 years.

Also, the majority of jobs posted that are looking for native English speakers are schools/enrichment centers/preschools. So if you are serious about teaching English here, be prepared to work with kids.

Pay for native English teachers is pretty decent and usually with a decent housing allowance. Of course, if you want to work terrible hours, then you will make more!
