Singapore Expats

I am looking for a real barber shop. This is a place where guys go to get their hair cut by other guys called barbers. This is one of the last places men can call their own. A place where farting, burping and scratching is not only allowed, but encouraged. If you know of such a shop in the Singapore, place post the location and any other pertinent data. Thanks.

Stroll around your neighborhood if you live in an HDB town or walk towards the market area. Most of the time, they're Indian barbershops, although I just probably haven't seen one with Chinese uncles manning a place.

I unserstand farting must be the problem as burping and scratching echoes around in every place starting from MRT and finishing with Esplanade concert halls and such.

The New Star on Upper East Road, Siglap is probably one the most famous traditional Indian Barbers. The retired President Nathan still goes there ever couple of weeks.

But does he fart regularly?

There's a Malay barber around there somewhere (quite near where the Dog n Bone is now IIRC). The main man is a musician (various instruments, album covers, etc. on the wall); a very friendly place that I used to visit when I lived out that way. First time I went there I hadn't expected to have an in-depth discussion about Deep Purple and all those old 70s rock bands with a Malay barber. Never tried farting in there though.

That might not go over too big there, unless you can confirm if they are halal or not.

Not sure which area are you looking at but the new HDB blocks in between Dover and Ghim Moh (along Commonwealth Ave West) has a barber shop run by Chinese uncles. It is next to the regular hair salon run by Chinese ladies.

And no, I have never tried it before (for obvious reasons above)

Not sure how long ago you last went there but it used to in a couple of shop houses across the road from where it is now. And yes it is very close to where the Dog and Bone is. Definitely Indian and no album covers or instruments on the wall.

There is a Malay shop just like that in one of the blocks at Marine Terrace. Same guy?

If he's got musical stuff on the wall then I guess it's the same chap - he must have moved. Definitely a Malay barber - different place to the Indian barber that Saint mentioned (New Star).

I thought malay barbers are common. Yet to see an Indian barber in the neighbourhoods I have lived , i.e. Tampines and AMK or malls I have visited.

Ofcourse you go to Little India you find Indian barbers.
