I'm thinking of going into Johor Bahru for a day of shopping and eating. Is it safe to go in without travel insurance?

You are not going to Mexico City for godsake !!

Unless you have money sticking out of your wallet or carrying 100 lbs of gold chain then anywhere you go is not safe.

JB is a pretty safe place (unless you're weak with street foods, or you intend to go to JB with Lady Gaga's outfit).

the OP may have been reading too much of the local media about kidnappings/robberies/etc.

same rules apply in JB as any other country. stick to your gut instincts, be on guard, but not alarmed. take precautions, and most of all enjoy yourself.

It should be alright. Like what other members already mentioned here, JB is just as safe (and dangerous) as any other city can get for you. As long as you are street-wise and know how to carry yourself around properly, you should be fine.

If you even have to ask a question like that, sorry then it's far too dangerous for you. How do you even managed to cross a street that doesn't have a pedestrian crossing?

To be fair if (s)he is pretty fresh to Singapore and was exposed to what the Singaporeans say about JB then his question is rather natural. Actually it show some good instincts as (s)he at least tried to verify if this is really THAT dangerous over there

IF it were THAT dangerous it would be rolling off the tongue like MS said earlier, Mexico City or maybe Tijuana, and be filling the front pages every day.

Well, even if without those news, personally, I still see JB is still a pretty safe place (at least it is, compared to the effect of the missing Singaporean in Athens)

I believe this could be just the effect of a person coming to Asia for the first time not knowing what to expect possibly preconditioned by a media. And then you have a bunch of, perhaps colleagues telling you how dangerous it is there and they really think like this so why not to believe them? Am I giving out too much credit?

OP - if, God forbid, something happened it's not exactly far or expensive to get from JB back to Singapore to go to the hospital so travel insurance would seem a bit overkill
