Hello, I'm thinking of booking a taxi or private car for daily pick up of my teenage kid from school everyday, from West to east coast. If anyone has a good taxi driver to recommend, please could you kindly pass me details. Thanks!

I know this is an old thread, but for anyone else looking (or in case you are still looking)... Uber is perfect for this, especially if your teen has a smartphone. Put Uber on their phone, link it to your credit card. They can arrange their own rides as needed and no cash is ever exchanged.

Plus, you'll get an e-mail showing the pick up time and place, drop off time and place and a GPS map of the route. If you want, they can also send you a "ETA" that will show their location on a map in realtime.

I probably agree that if all else fails, Uber would be the best bet, as there is an electronic trail.

But do realise that Uber drivers have been known to do un-Uberly things to passengers (e.g. an Uber driver dumped a couple of old ladies in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night in Melbourne recently when he realised he picked up the wrong fare).

So kids need to be careful too when they climb into an Uber.

For the sake of discussion, is it possible to engage a regular chap as hire car for say frequent trips to airport and back? Any idea what the charges could be like?

I've known people to do it. One of my neighbours is a taxi driver and he has a regular fare during his shift (I think at the beginning or end or something).

I do it in Sydney all the time, theres cars with HC on them and they gave me a rate that was cheaper than a regular taxi, i just call him and he shows up at designated time and place.

I know Singapore's generally very safe... but it pays to have some perspective - Uber tries out 'panic buttons' after rape cases in South Africa ( http://www.theage.com.au/technology/tec ... rrsix.html )

If you know an Uber driver who has access to a commercially licensed vehicle; there's nothing stopping him/her taking a fare without going through Uber (i.e. cash in hand). The legal criteria is that the vehicle has commercial insurance and that the fare is 'pre arranged'.
