Singapore Expats

Greetings, I'm an English teacher in South Korea looking to travel to Singapore and Malaysia during my winter vacation. I made what I thought to be the best 10 day itinerary but was informed that the train between the two (KTM I think) stopped their service or closed down or something.

Is this true? If it is then what's the best way to travel from Singapore to Malaysia and through to Kuala Lumpur?

You can still take the KTM train from Woodlands (northern part of Singapore) to Malaysia.

you better start planning and book your ticket. it is peak season! also, consider taking the bus. they will be from central singapore to central KL in about 6 hours.

train travel has something that the bus ride cannot replicate. i highly recommend it.

I've taken the train all the way from the old station in SG (Tanjong Pagar) to KL. Yes it took longer than the chop-chop/cheap-cheap '''Chinatown bus''' which I have also done, but it allowed me space, I could get up and walk around, sit back and enjoy the scenery (ok, mostly oil-palms).

There is a beauty and civility to arriving/leaving a place slowly, as one also does by ship.

You can take the train from Woodlands, Singapore until KL Sentral in Malaysia.

I've traveled in such trains before and I can assure you that you will find the experience rewarding. Especially when your bunk/seat is next to the window.

Better start book. Tickets can get sold out quickly for weekend trips, and even weekdays during holiday season (December, February).

Click the link above. Do not be intimidated by the seeming complex train schedule. Basically choose your start point and end point and then decide from that range if you want a lot of stops or fewer stops (express).

Pros and cons: Lots of stops allow you to view the different landscapes and enjoy people-watching in every station that the train stops but it takes very very long time. Express trains have fewer stops but it gets you there faster.

And for comfort, please go for first class seats/bunks.

A one-way ticket should cost you around SGD20 plus. Can't remember the exact price.

personally, i still prefer the business class type express bus than to train. i have been on the train years ago, both on express (less stops) and overnight. most of the time, the view are hedges on both side of the windows. forget all the great train scenery you see in movies, you dont get endless view of padi fields, coconut trees in the distance, sunset and sunrise, kampung hut, waterfall, river flowing with people washing their clothes, etc.

the bus was more exciting then as the north-south highway wasnt build, and the road to KL was mostly single lane!

but now, i see most people buried themselve on their ipad/smartphone during train/bus journey rather then look out of the window.
