Singapore Expats

Hi All,

We've just been advised by our real estate agent that BBQs are banned on balconies in Singapore, I was wondering if a Weber (which grills with the lid closed) is classified as a regular BBQ?

Also would anyone know if this is a blanket rule across all apartments in Singapore?

We have already shipped our Weber and stand and would hate to have to ship them back to Australia or for them to sit in storage until our next posting.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

some do, some don't.

i think it depends on how smokey the cooking is, not whether or not a device is classified as a grill coz it doesn't have a lid.

even if your condo doesn't explicitly ban it but you cause some crazy haze in the estate... i wish you luck!

shipping it back just coz it's disallowed in your current condo is a bit excessive... i'm sure you can roll it down to the pool or somewhere else for a luau in future.

My former MIL used to cook satay on an open charcoal pit in her HDB apartment. I've cooked a BBQ on my tiny bacloney before but the amount of smoke was excessive.

It may depend on where you live, but it isn't just the smoke that is a concern...the management could be concerned that there is a chance that a spark could ignite someone's laundry (common to dry on balcony, btw) and cause a massive blaze. Imagine a condo where everyone is allowed to grill on their balconies! Uh...a smokestack!

I used to think this was common for grills to be NOT allowed in balconies. All the apartments I have lived in used to ban Grills.

I don't think they think differently about weber with the lid.

they do this regularly in taiwan. yum!

There was a thread on this about a year ago, if you search on BBQ or balcony you may find it

Not sure if you know but charcoal BBQ's must be operated in open spaces (outside) with plenty of ventilation as the burning process gives off a lot of carbon monoxide which might cause you and anyone in the apartment a problem if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction. If you are going to do it I would strongly recommend you fix a CO detector in the property.
