Singapore Expats

I have a prediction. My prediction is that in a couple of years, the expatriates (from China, India, US etc…) will rule Singapore. They will increasing take on more leadership roles of CEOs, directors, heads of organizations, award winners etc… If you observe closely, it is already happening now. This year’s top PSLE (Primary School Leaving Exam) student is a China National. Most of the deans list students and first class honours students in the local universities are foreigners and more and more CEOs, even that of government link corporations are expats. The top players in our National teams are expats.

So mark my words, unless the new generation of Singaporeans wake up and get out of their happy over protected bubble and start fighting for their future, the expats (like our great grandfathers) will soon be the rulers of the country. At the rate at which talented and hungry expats are climbing up , our future prime minister may be an Indian or China PR or may even an Ang Moh!

My friend, the lack of intellectual capacity exhibited in your post shows precisely why FTs are still needed in this place. You may find this hard to believe but many expats actually sympathize with your plight. But please, at least show a modicum of critical thinking in how you conceptualize the future of this city. If you are the future, I fear for Singapore. Do you think any of the great cities of the world were built by xenophobia? No. They were built by becoming places people from all over the world wanted to move to. You need to understand that in the context of the WORLD Singers is a CITY and not a country. You will be forgotten in a heartbeat if you decide the key to your future is to close yourself off from the outside world.

THIS to me is one of the saddest aspects of the whole 'foreigner' debacle. I'm pretty sure that many expats, like me, agree with at least some of the underlying concerns that the local population have. I'd wager that the vast majority of the expat community doesn't like PR abusers either. Plus I believe most of us would agree that greedy employers who bring in foreign workers to replace Singaporeans who want to do the work, with the sole intention of driving their wages bills down are doing their own countrymen a great disservice.

But surely most of the foreigners here are still doing jobs that Singaporeans either don't want to do, or are incapable of doing due to lack of relevant experience, etc. Sadly all details like that have been subsumed into an Animal Farm style xenophobic rant fest, along the lines of "all S'poreans 100% good, all foreigners 100% bad."

The other day I did a short experiment on the TRE site. I looked at several of the articles and in each one I did a search for the word 'foreign' in the comments. Every article I looked at had comments blaming foreigners for whatever the situation was, and also blaming the gahmen for bringing the foreigners in. Even the fire at Novena MRT station was allegedly the fault of foreign workers; the theory being that they must have been doing their jobs to a lower standard than Singaporeans would have, and therefore were automatically responsible for the fire. This kind of utter arrogance, coupled with a complete lack of logical reasoning and objectivity, is something that I find extremely disappointing.

Well, at least the poster had the humility and sense of decency to admit that they'd made a mistake. Sadly that is an extremely rare commodity among posters from the local community in my experience.
