Singapore Expats

Hi there,

I'm contemplating taking up an apartment for rent on 10 lorong 31, geylang.

I've been told that this is quite far from the murkier areas of geylang and closer to the eateries and supermarkets... Therefore safer!


I just wanted your opinion on how safe it is, especially considering that I will be an expat and haven't really lived in Singapore before.

Any responses will be greatly appreciated!

As a guy it's fine, as a woman (especially if you are Asian) you may get propositioned whilst walking around that area. Other than that it's pretty safe!

Also, you'll be right next to a mosque there if I remember correctly, I suppose that's a personal thing whether that bothers you or not.

The eateries are scattered all along Geylang Rd, more of them being close to the 'murky' side. Keep in mind the 'murky' side isn't really that terrible. Street walkers, outdoor porn vendors in the alleys, sometimes drug dealers, and gang members. I used to eat lunch and dinner there all of the time with coworkers, and even with my family. None of them ever bothered me if I was with my wife. If I was alone or just with a couple of male friends, then some of the girls will try to act cute and call you over, but it is mostly amusing.

The real 'murky' side is roughly west of Lorong 24, and south of Geylang Road on the even number Lorongs. There might be other small pockets outside, but not much. This map will help you orientate yourself:

And the good food is all along Geylang Rd and Sims ave, roughly the whole stretch from Sims Way to Paya Lebar Rd.

Except in Little India, I am yet to see (hear) a mosque that loudly broadcasts the prayer call ..

Areas around Mosques can get very busy and crowded during prayer time though right? Either way, it's probably not relevant, there will be hookers nearby as if a mosque would bother you!

I miss the call to pray, in KL our place is near a mosque and its quite soothing. I have attempted to memorise the words, its very therapeutic and lets be honest quite funny trying to match the tones.

I stay near the Masjid Anguilia, and .. I am yet to see a massive crowd outside on Fridays as well as on other muslim religious days .. they confine the crowd inside ..

Whereas in Dharul Gufran Mosque, every Friday, the number of bikes and cars can be a real mess and traffic almost comes to a stop ..

Fridays are the worst! You will see seas of motorcycles and cars parked haphazardly everywhere around it. But other than that, it is fine
