Australia has had one coin issue since 1966. New designs appear and a new $1 and $2 came along a decade back but basically all coins are backwards compatible (in fact the 10c was compatible with the pre 66 shilling). So why the heck does an advanced society like Singapore need a 3rd issue of completely incompatible coins in less time?

Obviously designed to resemble the Euro. But why the stupid choice of subject. They look like a children's colouring book. We have gone from a beautiful flower $1 coin to a children's colouring-in ship and golf tee (airport). How naff...
But boy, they are churning them out pretty quickly - it will not be long until the old coins are basically out of circulation.

I threw my first few in m 'foreign' coin jar..... not knowing where they were from at first glance.

I think it's hilarious...in the land where they plan everything to the nth degree...they didn't realize that their new coins wouldn't work anywhere. Unless they did plan it that way...and have a roster of "works" lined up to replace vending machines, trolleys, etc etc across the Island.

Here's my thought. Countries like say Indonesia, Russia, India etc whose currencies have depreciated so much over the years that coins are not relevant any more in those countries. Basically the cents, paise, sens etc are worthless.

In countries in Singapore, where the reverse has happened i.e the value of their currencies have gone up multifold, the cent has gone up in value so how do you kind of celebrate this marvelous feat? May be thats why they have introduced these new chick shiny brand new coins. I used to be a coin and currency notes collector. So I am all for these new coins being rolled out . The old ones had really become boring.

I've realized why the coins were changed... Malaysia issued new ones first.

^ and let me guess.... the Malaysian 1RM coin could be used in vending machines as a SGD1?

The new coins were announced in Feb '13 and to be fair, its also the vendor's like the grocery chains, beverage machine, children toy car etc vendors responsibility to calibrate their machines to accept the new coins.

Frankly speaking, the only place I use coins in an automated way is in the cola vending machines and so I dont really see it as such a big problem, because if you walk a few steps further you can actually buy the can or bottle from a real person.

MAS has been working with public transport operators to ensure that coin-operated machines at MRT/LRT stations are calibrated to accept both the current and new series coins before the launch. MAS has also been working with businesses with coin-operated facilities such as vending machine operators and supermarkets to prepare them for the launch.
