Singapore Expats

I'm here with my boyfriend until the end of october (we hope) and on arrival (aug 5th) I got a 90 day visit pass (I guess because I'm british?) and he got just 30 days (canadian). The 30 days is almost up so he's applied online for extension and it was denied.

I think he has the option to go in person to ICA and apply, maybe with support from his employer. We thought maybe to just take a day trip to malaysia - would he get a new visa on re-entry? Would I be given a new visa also (I'd rather just keep my 90 day)? Or will we have to leave for five days if he wants a new visa?

I can't find any conclusive information on ICA or MOM website so would appreciate anyone who knows where I can find this info.

Yes he might get a new visa by crossing over to MY but probably not for long. Perhaps plan a longer trip further away (Bangkok?) for a few days. Then he will most likely get another 30 days. Nothing guaranteed and his denial for an online extension won't help (and is worrying).

Having his employer support will most likely only hurt, as it indicates that he has been working here while on a tourist visa. Which is essentially illegal - he should have applied for a business visa in that case.

The visa runs have apparently been met with much scrutiny lately... I still did it without problems 6 years ago, but things have changed since. He can try, but general advice is to go somewhere for approx 5 days, and then come back. And yes, you would also get a new visa, probably only for 30 days this time. There is some uncertainty here - you may get 90, 30 or even only 5 days visa on your next entry, it depends on the immigration officer and their internal policies

I would doubt, though, that he would be able to stay like this until end of October.

There is no real information on this on the ICA website because all those policies regarding visa extensions and re-issuance on re-entry are unofficial and, to a certain extent, up to the immigration officer to decide.

Thanks for your responses and advice. We've actually got a trip to bali booked friday-monday as well. We're going to try the malaysia trip tomorrow on the bus, hope that we get at least two days to then take our flight to bali and extend the trip there to be 5 days. Then, hope for better visas on our return.

As for his working here, he is still working for the company's UK branch, and being paid in the UK - just working out of their Singapore office temporarily.

Also I just asked what kind of questions were on the online extension application and it turns out that someone from his work did the application on his behalf - so not even sure what was entered that meant it was denied :s

This doesn't quite make sense? The way I'm reading what you are say is he's working on a tourist pass?!

Visa extensions have no questions .. just basic info and click, that's it .. (or the relationship with the person extending ? I forgot)

BTW, when you apply for an extension, now it states, should your visa be rejected, you will be away for more than 3 days .. it was discussed here ..

Is your flight to Bali from Malaysia? If you cross back over to go to Changi, that still counts against you. Conventional wisdom and advice often given is at least 5 days out of Singapore.

I am afraid he'd need a Singapore work pass to do this legally.

It depends on the 'work'. There are some categories (meetings) that are ok.

Unless he's here for 60 days or less and falls into one of the following categories.....

if he came on a 30 days visa I'm assuming the employer may have brought him over here possibly for the installation or QCing of an installation of specialized equipment. Or he could be here in one of the other categories.

To update - We went over to JR today on the bus and had no problems. My 90 day pass was ended, and I got a fresh 90 days when I came back in. My partner also got a fresh 30 days. I'm definitely going to get him to talk to his work about him needing a work pass though - even if he categorises under an exemption (which I don't think he does looking at that link) we are here for 60+ days. I would have thought the singapore office would have told him all this at the start :s

I'm surprised Canadians only get 30 days. Out of curiosity, what is his race?

I'm going to bet he's white anyway, but I'm pretty smart and may have alternative sources of intel.
