The use of private property for accommodation of less than six months was legislated as illegal in Singapore on Monday (Feb 6), making it unlawful for owners to rent out their homes via online homestay networks such as Airbnb and Roomorama.

Will this ever be enforced???

The trend in many cities has been for investors to buy apartments for the express purpose of renting via Airbnb. This tends to turn a residential building into a hotel. I can see why they would do that.

Everything and anything, with all its good intention, eventually gets commercialized? The enterprising and capitalistic spirit that live in us. Is it any wonder that communism failed?

I think, yes (must be a reason for this extra piece of legistlation} but I expect it is going to be on some lower level than for the HDB and renting out flats with one room locked (etc.).

Yes this is long overdue and it is very welcome. The owners of 'newer' places will be annoyed - they have been vocal on FB etc stating they should be allowed to do what they want forgetting of course that they bought under the 'old rules' which prohibited short term rental and why should the other 99% be inconvenienced because of them. It will be interesting to see if this 'new class' of property is attactive - personally I don't think so.

Most of the damage in our condo recently has been caused by short term renters. I've caught the motherphuckers damaging property more than once. We have resorted to bracing them up when they enter (we don't have a guard) and insisting they depart ASAP. I think the URA etc realized they were on the verge of allowing civil war to breakout in condos if this continued.

there's like a dozen plus FB pages for folks advertising for Transient housing and lots of bed spacers ...

Unless the Govt change tack , I dont see them doing anything about it unless the "noise from ground" makes them take action.

Similar to electric bikes/scooters , anyone with half a brain knows they would be dangerous as folk here dont give a crap about where they ride and how they ride and dont particularly have any concern for others. The Gove only took action when the noise from social media got too much for them to ignore.

Same with this , will the folks who making money from airbnb make more noise than the ones who feel they are getting inconvenienced by it?

Many condo management councils are circulating explicit rules forbidding short term rentals, and are encouraging residents to notify the URA when cases are found.
It would not be surprising to start seeing reports soon of crackdowns on those doing this.

Airbnb can still function in Singapore, especially for Serviced Apartments and resorts that are licensed for short term rentals.

The article also indicates that some newer residential sites may be allowed flexibility to cater to shorter term rentals. Airbnb is not finished in SG.

Yes, we do, we are and we expect this as well; I also expect that the IRAS and other departments may start to run data matching algorithms to catch out those who do not declare their AirBNB income and worse still, claim owner-occupier status for their land tax. The ATO in Australia has started assisting state revenue departments in doing this with some success.

I don't have any experience in SG but my Bangkok condo used to be overrun with short-term renters. They are menace to long-term residents (too many people in small rooms, noises all hours/days, trash thrown in hall ways, open doors with kids playing/running around hall ways, overrunning elevators/swimming pool, etc).

The condo (and Bangkok) finally cracked down on this and now it's much better. We now have signs all over stating renting less than one month is not allowed; and security actually checking "strangers" showing up with luggage, etc. Overall, the place is much cleaner and quieter.
