Singapore Expats

My husband has taken a job in Singapore and we are looking to move shortly with 2 teenage boys.

I would appreciate advice on what schools you recommend, what the costs are, and where I go to find out further information.

I am also looking for work in Singapore, but do not have a permit, so would also appreciate advice on where to start. I'm hoping my husbands work can organise a work permit, and I have 7 years previous experience with HSBC, so have potential to work there.

If you can find a job with HSBC or elsewhere, the paperwork to get permission to work is easy if your husband has an EP. You only need a "Letter of Consent" to work on your Dependent's Pass, which is unlikely to be turned down. You can of course apply for your own EP through your new employer but that is a more complicated process. EPs are specific to each job so you have to find the job first, then apply.
Schools are difficult at the moment, with most having waiting lists. If you want a southern hemisphere school year, the Australian International School is your best bet. Local schools also run from Jan - Dec. Other International Schools here have an Aug/Sept - June/July school year. See the other post in the families and kids board about school listings. You need to check the individual school websites and contact the schools directly about places. Normally I would say visit them first with your boys and see what will suit your teenagers, but at the moment you may have little or no choice. ERIS is fairly new, so isn't full yet as far as I know.

International schools have huge waiting lists. My niece and nephew go to local schools but then they are from Singapore. I think the teaching at local schools is of a very high standard but it is very competitive between students - ideal if you want to push your children in academia! However, your children may find that hard to adapt to.
