Singapore Expats

Hi,
I just arrived in Singapore 5 days ago with my family. We are staying at a Serviced Apartment for now and are looking for an apartment. We found one place that we really liked in the Central Business District (Dist 9). The only thing that concerns me about the location is the air quality. If anyone has anything to say about the air quality in different regions of Singapore, I'd really like to hear it.

Also, does anyone know anything about the NEA's PSI readings of air quality (http://app.nea.gov.sg/psi/)? According to my reading of the NEA's statistics, it looks like the Central area is not much worse than the other areas of Singapore--could this be true? I think it depends a lot on where the air sensors are located, but I can't find this information anywhere.

I don't know how important air quality will be to our everyday lives. None of us has asthma...yet...but if living in the CBD is going to change that, then I'd rather live farther out. I know the East Coast has better air, but it is not an option for us because we won't have a car.

It seems that you are quite concern over the air quality. Do you currently have a good HEPA air filter that can filter down to 0.01 microns. I'm using it for about more than a year and i am satisfied with its performance.

It depends which part of CBD (D9) you are talking about. Air quality in Mt Sophia & Mount Emily is good because of the park and trees in the large compound in Istana.

If you are living along the busy Orchard Road, the air quality is very questionable.

The best air quality would be Thomson & Bukit Timah area.

yup i agree tat , i didnt found any air quality problems in singapore so far

Air is being pollution everywhere. But i hope it'll be improved in the future. I think you can go to other regions out of Singapore. May be in Viet Nam (Ha Long, Da Lat or Nha Trang), Malaysia, Brunei .v.v.. and any country in south east Asia!

It's not so much the effects of traffic pollution and the like in central singapore you have to worry about, as the smoke/smog/haze when the burning season gets going in Indonesia. Then it can be pretty awful all over Singapore, although not as bad recently as it was about 10 years ago. The air quality ratings given on the govt websites are averages, and my lungs generally let me know when it peaks higher than the average figures reported. It can be unpleasant to exercise outside when the haze is bad. There are also a lot of petrochemical facilities towards the south west in Jurong.

There is a lot of chemical burning at Pasir Gudang industrial estate in Johore. With a north easterly wind the poisonous fumes blow over Yishun and Ang Mo Kio. Avoid living in these areas if possible.
