Singapore Expats

Hi my husband is about to get a job in Singapore, and I have two children, one age 10 and one age 7, I am looking for information to help me with schooling, we probably wont come out until sept 2009 as my 10 year old has just one more year in primary school here and then would be moving up to secondary school. Can anyone give me some website to visit please or advise on good english speaking schools. My 10 year old is dyslexic and has teaching support at his school at the moment, so I preferably need a school with a sympathetic special needs teacher. Thank you Karen Mitchell

Check out the schools listing on this website (singapore expats that is). International Schools have waiting lists as well, you will have to check them out early.

Dover Court has special needs facilities for things like dyslexia.

thank you for your quick reply will check the sites you suggest. Do you know realistically what the waiting lists are like, if we were to come out for sept 2009 would I need to put them on a list now? Thanks Karen

We are moving out this September and will put our kids into Chatsworth until places available at Tanglin which follows Natioal Curriculum. We have been told that the wait time for our 10 year old will be approx 6 months then our 7 year old will move onto sibling list - should get a place by Sept 2009 but no guarantees! Good luck!

Wait List depends on the school, so your first step should be to identify the school(s) that you are interested in. If you have an expat package, some of the schoools (outrageously in my opinion) allow you to bypass the list on payment of a sum of money, and maybe the employer will help with this. All the International Schools have a good standard of English, but bear in mind, putting your kids on the waitlist means, in most cases, a non-refundable deposit and pretty expensive fees. Best place to start is the links, as has been pointed out, then do a search on the forum with the selected schools names, should turn up a gold mine of information. My five year old just started International School.

some friends of mine put their kids into homeschooling and in their instant in private setups that help conduct the homeschooling since parents - especially useful for those who may not have skills or time. Heard there's one known as the ACE for School for Tomorrow and I read in the following artile which u may wanna to check it out -

For special needs, there's one local school known as "Pathlight", you might want to check them out as well. The mainstream schools r unlikely to have resources for special needs.

Hi, We recently moved to Singapore and my 10 year old son started at Dovercourt. From the experience I have had so far ( my son has speech therapy there) the special needs care provided is very good.
Might be worth giving them a try...

When I was looking for an International School before we came no school could give a guarantee of a place but we only had a few months before moving and you do have to pay to be put on the waiting list even tho there is no guarantee. I know people who have had to home school for a while until they could get in at a school.
Some of the schools are setting up new a campus and I found a place for my son who is 8 at Chatsworth International's smaller campus on the East coast which is new with small class sizes and we are very happy there.

I have not heard anything bad about Dover so maybe thats the way to go if you are worried about the additional help your child might need, but I am sure most of the schools will know how to give extra help for dyslexia.

I was wondering how you have got on with your search for a suitable school for your children? Both my boys, aged 11 and 9 have dyslexia and I am at present looking for a school suited to their needs. We will be visiting Singapore shortly to look at schools. Can you give any advise please?
