Singapore Expats

I'm thinking of moving to Singapore and getting a job there. As of yesterday I've been told I'm being downsized and will be finishing work shortly.
My thought was to go to Singapore for a month to get the lay of the land and see what the job prospects are.

I'm interseted in knowing where to stay. What area could I rent a low cost hotel room for a month, or a low cost furnished apartment for a month. I'd probably need to travel into the business area many days, but some distance away from the center would be alright. Can anyone suggest an area, place, and how much they think it would cost? I'm hoping for around 700 USA or less.

Ain't gonna happen. You would have to pay that for a HDB room (bedroom in an HDB Housing Development Board Flat) with a sharing arrangement with the owner and who knows who else...

Bout the closest you would be able to do is a backbackers hostel/hotel but the amenities are rough and it would still probably set you back 5-700/ month or better.

have a look at asiarooms.com and check which hotels you can afford for your duration. another option is Service Apartments.

Yup, looking the hostel websites over it looks like I could take the worst of the lot and just make it at about 600 USA. No frills though.

What I had been told is that the center of Singpore is as expensive as Tokyo, but getting outside that gets much much cheaper. Amd I worng about this? Since I would have time in the morning to commute, I wouldn't mind staying fairly far out of the center and commuting if the price was low.

Canoes? Yes possibly at McRitchie Reservoir. Bass? No. Local fish? Yes.

Yes, the further from town you go the cheaper it is. But there are no hostel/backpacker type of places there, which means renting a room in and HDB Flat (go back to my original post).

Sounds like the HBD flat wouldn't work as there is a waiting list and the wait is for months. I just need a cheap Serviced Apartment for a while and soon. I was hoping outside the major area would be cheap prices for these. This is what I did to setup in Thailand, and I got a furnished place for a couple hundred for a month. I guess Singapore isn't Thailand.

Maybe a hostel is my best bet then. Unless someone want's to do an apartment swap in Tokyo for a while in the next few weeks...........(casting bobber and hook....sitting and waiting)

So what do the people that just come to Singapore for a while do? Do they stay with friends, do they sleep on the beach? Do they pony up and rent a 1000$ serviced app for a couple of months/

Typically your company pays for it so that is why peole get the serviced apt. If you are going to be here for a short while then renting a room is your best bet. You will have to search for an owner who is willing to do this. Personally, craigslist might be an option. Though not used very much in singapore, I have seen success. I know someone who 'rented' a room at $500 a month from an expat who stayed at a serviced apt his company paid for. He just pocketed the money, I guess the $500 was his drinking money for the month.

Not sure what you mean about a waiting list. Most HDB flats are privately owned so you would be dealing with the owner, not the government.

He might have found out about SHiFT. But it's hard to find one of those as well as then tend to go immediately if not sooner.

You could try Craigslist for Singapore - under vacation rentals, some people rent out their apartment if they are going away for a while or have a spare room... just know that it is a risk with what you get and who is renting to you.
I was just there for a month, luckily the business covered 2 of the 4 weeks, but still, hotels in Singapore are expensive!!

I think you should stay at a rental house because you stay long-term. Staying in hotel is very expensive
