Singapore Expats

Hi,

Am arriving in Singapore first week of April.

Need cheap hotels to stay in for a week or two.
Can you advice of any in the range of 50$ or so per night?

I would prefer a decent area and not some run down shack in Geylang please.

Kindly advice.

$50 is really pushing it, I don't think it can be done on such a budget.

But maybe someone knows of a little gem somewhere...

Found Fragrance Hotel on Lor 18, Geylang.
Apparently its a two star hotel and outside the actual red light area.

Looks close to the CBD too from my estimation using Google Maps.

Anyone know this place? Would it be safe to stay there with my wife?

what's wrong with geylang? it's the safest place in singapore. you get lots of cctv, undercover cops, vice cops, uniform cops, foot patrol cops, etc.

A couple of friends who are now in Aus, lived in Geylang for several years. They loved it. They were just around the corner from the restaurant with no signboard or something like that. Always happening at night time. Great place if you are childless.

I thought OP didn't want Geylang? Anyway, when I moved here, company had me stay for 10 days in a Serviced Apartment in Lor 41. Walked around one night and found it...regular.

How is that? Very close to CBD as per Google Maps!

Remember you must tell them your budget, say 35$ per night, then ask if they can accomadate you for that price. shop around and you will get it. Never quote 50$, because they will just say sorry, 60$ is the cheapest or more. Singapore mentality is to jack the price up, everyone is on the make.

I know a teacher that's been living here 6 years and only pays 200$ a month rent she's from China. Also when i visited the hotels in China Town we was able to knock the price down from 200$ a night to 80$ for a double room. Everything depends on the vacant capacity! If they are over 90% full it will be more difficult to lower the price. only 60% full and they won't let you walk away

Basically, all hotel 81's and fragrance hotels also rent rooms by the hour.

The fact they are somewhere means there is some form of activity going on, mainly hostess bars. If you don't mind having some different neighbors once in a while they should be okay, just know that both chains have a lot of "activity" (also locals sneaking away from parents houses though, or on a affair meeting with the mistress etcetc)

When I read the title I was going to suggest this place as a lark! But you beat me to it.

The area around there isn't so bad, you'll be just across the road from Sim Lim Square and walking distance to plenty of tourist haunts.

There's plenty of hotels in that range in fairly decent areas, the hotel 81 chain is worth checking out. But to be fair, all you need to do is hop in a cab and ask the driver to take to you a hotel in town thats in your price range, chances are they'll be obliging and will show you a few options.

Hotel 81 is better i think more than fragrance.

When I came to Singapore, I stayed Hotel81 Orchid around 1 week.
Many Hotel81 in Singapore. Orchid is maybe one of new hotel.
Clean and not so far MRT. not so close.. maybe in 15min.
many cheap and good chinese restaurnats there. very convenient.
staff also very kind. I stayed there Sep 2009 and Oct 2009, 2times.
They remember my face and said, welcome back!.

Nobody recommend me to stay in Geylang, cause its red light area and
I am woman and stayed alone. but acutually, i didnt feel its dangerous
area. I feel sad about standing young woman, though..

Miho: It's very hard to get cheap and clean and safe. You may have just been lucky you know the area a bit?

When we were travelling last we found a really good site for cheap aurora hotels and I think it was an international site so they might have info on deals in Singapore but I think it's too late for the OP since they wanted first week of April? I wonder how they made out?

ksl had the best advice, find something that's typically a bit more, get prices from the competition, and get them to give you the $50/night rate you can afford. I hate paying the asking price for anything.

The Hotel81 in Geylang actually looks 'classy' from the outside.. ?
