Hi

Just wanted some advice if possible:

I have been sent an informal proposal for employment in singapore and just wanted some advice:

they have offered around 6K a month basic - in sale swso will be comm at soem point is that manageable?

Also I am thinking of my girldfriend coming over too - my future emploeyr will be sorting out my visa etc - do you knwo if partners can be added to this or will she need a visiting Visa and will that constrain her to be in Singapore for a short period of time?

You need to do a search around "girlfriend", "partner", "cost of living", then get back to us with specific questions you may have.

@Eagle: No offense to you at all but you seem to get angry/ disturbed easily when people asking question that you don't "like". I understand that you've been here in this chatting room for a long time (maybe too long) so that you're tired when people asking the same question one too many times. I truly understand. But you may want to consider using more appropriate word choice/ etiquette. I saw your thread using the word "bullsh*t" minutes ago. Think about it. Did the person who asked the question nicely expected not so nice words coming out from your keyboard? It's weird the fact that you're promoting a website (mankind project) which promotes "self awareness, generosity, compassion, etc, etc" but your behavior contradicts otherwise. I could easily use the word "bullsh*t" as well to those kind of websites which may just asking for money and the followers have nothing else to gain. But I do respect you and hopefully you have more respect to others as well. PEACE.

No, he doesn't get angry very easily. In fact, he doesn't get angry at all. Cynical, sometimes, but not as bad as I am I suppose. But in the past two years, the quality of "foreign talent" seems to be dropping to the point now, the most of them cannot seem to even use the excellent search engine that this site has (in fact 2 of them). When people are too lazy to use what the purveyors of this site offer, but insist on asking the exact same questions over and over again, it become a situation where even the regulars get cheesed off as well. When someone asks a question here, most of us do exactly the same thing, we use the search engine to find the latest relevant answers. Additionally, newbies should guess, with all that 'talent', that most, if not all of us, are working stiffs as well and voluntarily moderate and/or frequent this board at the same time. We try to pay it forward but often, in the face of overwhelming laziness, we do get frustrated. It has absolutely nothing to do with how long we have been here. If we didn't care about helping people we wouldn't still be doing this after umpteen years.

We actually like helping people who try to help themselves. But having to regurgitate the same things over and over to people just because they are too lazy to use a search engine, well.......

Thanks for the kind response Sundaymorning. Talent can mean many things as you already know. There are accountants, athletes, doctors, etc. And sometimes these people happen just too busy too know the details or the way around in this website... including myself. You were an expat yourself about 16 years ago right? Don't worry I didn't steal your identification but I just happen read to one of your threads. So you may already know that these people just have tons of things to do before moving and settling in this great country Singapore. So these people may not be lazy, but they may just don't have the time. The second point that I would like to make is about the search button itself. It happened to many times that the search button in every other forum/ corporate websites simply sucks. Too many times that it didn't get you the result that you wanted. People, including myself, tend to go to the Google website, Yahoo, or Bing to get the information much faster even it's outside the forum's own search engine. This habit tends to carry on to many people when they visited this website for the first time. We're sorry but we simply didn't know that this search engine really performs well, not that we're lazy.

For the construction feedback: it might be better to use a sentence like "please use the search engine in this website (not Google) to answer your own question." or if you're nice enough you can just copy and paste the link to the newly discussed thread. Carrying the word "moderator" has a lot of meaning my friend. People think you're actually getting paid to do this (are you?)... if they're pissed they will prefer to use other means to get info which actually reduce the website traffic. Being cynical or rude is not always something people want to encounter, esp when they're newbie like myself.

i think that's because there too lazy to search and want the answer easily without tiring up themselves !

all of that in their mind thinking that they may add a letter or a word that can make their querie different but in fact not.

a bit of search and concentration can make u avoid the mods loaded artillerie and ready-to-fire

The moderators here are all voluntary, we are/were/still are normal regulars with a long history here. We have been "approached" by Admin and asked if we would take up the cudgel. We do not get paid, and rarely get thanks (actually that's not true - the thanks bit that is). We do it, as I said before, as a way of paying it forward. I wish I'd only been here 16 years. I've been a PR for around that, I've actually been in Singapore over 28 years, long before we had things like the internet to ease us into Singapore's culture, pitfalls & potholes. So, it's easy to get cynical when you see people ask the silliest of questions that have already been answered dozens, if not scores, of times already, often in other threads still on the first page of a given forum's index page. They don't even need to use a search engine normally. There is most people's first mistake, they shouldn't make assumptions (just because other website/forums search engines or moderators are paid, etc). Never assume. If you assume when you get to Singapore, you will have a rough time initially, because any assumptions you can make, the locals will shred them for you every time. It's a first world infrastructure. You can make up you own mind after 6 months about the native inhabitants (some are great).

Anyway, I'm supposed to be wrapping the last of the prezzies while the rest of the family has gone to church, so I best get on it before they get home.

sorry guys, but totally agree:
if somebody totally new to this envoirment and culture drops on this site, it should be a very friendly "Welcome!".
The different treatment and / or experiences come themselves.
Beeing harsh brings just a first impression, which you might not want to share too often.
There is no stupid or silly question.
Especially when you are dealing within the written communication. Took centuries to invent the Emoticons , just to make written sentences less or more obvious.
Please keep that in mind.
Moving down here is hard enough without to meet the door with your nose first.

Agreed. But it's pretty silly or stupid to ask the same questions that have been answered umpteen times already and could easily be found with the search engine if they would but try. Which is exactly what we have to take a break from our full-time jobs to do in order to answer the question yet again.

Imagine that my own personal situation has been 9 months ago like this:
Suddenly received the offer to go to Singapore, finding out where is Singapore (google) , How does it look (google maps), where would be the office, why there are so much rules and fines , How expensive?Safe?Clean?Religion? and another 1000thsd topics. Children?Schools?Health Care?Living Costs?Housing?Car?Insurances?
Then you receive a date ($), where you should decide: yes, or no?
Want to go for a look- and see trip?
Sitting thousands of miles away. In a different climate and time- zone.
And you might find this great forum.
Honestly: Before I found your forum, i did not even know, that i am going to be called an EXPAT.
And to find something like the LTA in google:
easy to say, but Singaporeans are with the abbreviations harsher than the German masters just listen to the traffic news in the morning:
Heavy Traffic on the PIE,the ECP,KAE,...
This might be really confusing. And the restrictions regarding cars ( how to explain somebody outside the box, what is COE, what an OPC car?), real estate ( can not live in a HDB-flat as EP, but PR can, lah! ) .
Guys: Once more: i am just a couple of months now here down- under and without YOUR help, i would have made another 1.000.000 stupid mistakes more! So thanks a lot you Admin guys for your GREAT work. And just keep in mind sometimes these stupid newbies, which come with wideopened eyes and asking so much questions! WE NEED YOU
