Student here on an internship in Singapore from July-Oct this year. How realistic is it to get get a 1BR/studio for S$1500 a month? Location is not really important though I'll be working near NUS and occasionally Jurong. Thanks!

You are not allowed to rent residential property (neither 1BR/Studio nor a room in a flatshare as suggested above) without having a minimum 6-months visa.
Your only legal options are hotels (fleapits start at S$60, more reasonable ones at S$100/night) and Serviced Apartments (studios are S$2500/month and above), or bunking with friends free of charge.
It is not a good idea to break the rules in Singapore!

Yes, to legally rent residential property you need a residence visa (EP, WP, PR, PEP, SP, LTVP, DP) of minimum 6 months duration.
The landlord is responsible for checking and ensuring the persons residing in his property fulfil it. They can get into deep shit if they fail to do this, therefore no reasonable landlord would accept a tenant as the OP.

So the solution is to have the school apply for his Student Pass and request a 6 month duration for the pass........

LMB Housing (google them) rent properties near NUS and are counted as Serviced Apartments, I beleive they do a lot of students in NUS, we used them when we came across a few years ago, not sure if they do a room let for $1500 a month though.
