Singapore Expats

Hi All,

I am posting on behalf of a friend of mine. They have a daughter (15 years old) and they wish to send her to study in Singapore.

She is not English educated and thus will need plenty of lesson to brush up her command of English.

Her parents are thinking of letting her complete the rest of her education here in Singapore. They are aiming for her to complete at least a diploma.

So, what exactly does she need? Information? Pointers? Does she have a school already? A visa?

They have not applied for anything as of yet. Not too sure what she will need. They are thinking of applying for her to study here in Singapore as the education system is better.

They have just started sourcing info. Is there any school that is able to cater to her needs? Or does she have to apply for a English language course first?

Where/with whom would she live?

I have heard of a person who works as a caretaker/landlord for the Vietnamese students. The rich parents enrolled them into International Schools on student passes. The caretaker is the legal guardian and he manages the house (a landed property) where all of Vietnamese student stays and takes care of them.

And yes, their English level is not good enough, which is why my friend, a recent graduate, gives English tuition to help them up.

She will be living either with her cousin whom married to SG holding a dependent pass or her parents would be renting or buying a house for her to stay in SG.

How should she get started?

Is a 15 year old allowed to live alone? I'm wondering how much you have thought this through?

I am not sure about this rule though. If i know everything, i would not be here asking.

I have heard about hostel for some boarding schools. Would this be applicable to her? If worse case, she would be staying with her cousin.

Any thoughts on this guys?

Hi there, I came to Singapore when I was 10 years old alone to study 20 years ago, well the prices and schooling system is different now but I think the general trend is still that if the English level of the student is not good enough, the student will be held back for one year.

I was P5 in Taiwan and was held back to P4, but the plus side is that the P4 school work became "easy mode" and I still topped the class at P6 despite not knowing a single word of English when I first arrived.

However I did miserably for my entrant english test to my primary school, I practically handed in a blank answer sheet. But my parents did give the primary school $5000 "donation" to fast track things lol.

I think you'll have to physically contact the schools to find out the details on their "policies". You can always find a list of schools in the Singapore MOE website.
