Hi all, I just got word from my BIL (he's a PR, btw) that my son needs to apply for a student pass before he can start schooling. I have looked at moe's and there's no mentioned of this (either that or I'm looking at the wrong page). Any ideas? My son is 4yo and shld be in k1. We plan to get him started by July,1st this year.

Is your son actually on a dependents pass? If so, I don't believe he needs a student pass, however, if he is on a LTVP then he does.

Sorry, I didn't explain this earlier. My husband has got an EP, so my son and I are on DP. I have also read from now web said, we don't need a student pass. But I think I should probably confirm that with immi, just to be safe.

I can confirm that if you and your children are on DPs you are entitled to enrol for both international or local schools in Singapore, without applying for a student pass. This is because you can only hold one type of visa, eg. either a DP or a Student's pass. I have 4 children all attending International School here on DPs.

Student’s Pass
In accordance with the Immigration Regulations, a foreigner who wishes to study in a Government / Government-aided / Independent School requires a Student’s Pass, unless he / she is a holder of a Dependant’s Pass (DP) or an Immigration Exemption Order (IEO).

My son who is 4 attending local pre-school is on DP but I have a friend of mine who isn't married to her partner so is on a LTVP, thus their daughter requires a student pass to go to school.

You will be fine to go to any local kinder or International School. You can go to local primary too on a DP but less likely to get a space.
