Re: My $0.02

BEST ADVICE: Invite people for coffee, or lunch. The more you get someone to invest their time in you, the higher chance you get an interview, name of hiring manager, or a lead on an open position.... Invite HR people of potential employers out for coffee or lunch ?? haha .. you are kidding .. Let ...

How many years of experience does he have? Does he qualify for a PEP? Are you Singaporean? If not, where are you from? How difficult will it be for you to get permission to stay/live in SG? (hint: if you are from another SEA country, it could be a challenge) How much money have you budgeted for livi...

My $0.02

You might want to look at the Singapore American Chamber of Commerce website http://www.amcham.org.sg/ for a list of American companies doing business in Singapore. (I noticed there is an Aerospace & Defense Committee. This would be my job search starting point. ) Once you identified companies in SG...

I figured a bottle of something could help grease the wheels.... Getting an invite to join the A-list members of this forum for a meal would be a bottle of Whisky well spent. That is ... If I don't needed it to get/keep my Job  If I don't need it to get an apt. :o If I don't need it to get my...

Whisky or is it Whiskey

All,

I have this 1-litre bottle of 12 year old single malt scotch whisky (Glenfiddich) that I brought with me to SG.

The funny thing is .....

I don't drink.

Men's suits

Folks, In the short time I've been in SG, it has become clear that my light-weight suits are not "light-weight" for SG. I usually get one or two "top end" (i.e. Brooks Brothers) and the rest are "off-the-rack" suits. A quick survey of the office attire of my office mates indicate the "off-the-rack" ...

Where to buy PC software

All, Need to purchase MS Office 2010 and virus protection software for my Windows 7 PC. Tried to buy via amazon but could not purchase the download only version of the required software (download option available only in the US). Looking to the forum for advice where to go in SG to purchase the abov...

So true

You are correct, don't use any other browser other than IE. I had to resurect and old Windows XP laptop during my last job search as no browser running under Linux would work correctly. Also, if you have a 64-bit Windows 7 machine, use the 32-bit version of IE as the 64-bit IE will not work correctly.

Mobile Internet Connection

I am transfering to SG soon. I plan to come to SG 4 to 6 weeks before my EP will be ready. I was wondering what the local internet provider's short term options for internet connectivity are? A previous posting said mobile broadband connectivity is bad. You would be better off sitting in a Starbucks...

Forget about looking from OZ ...

No firm or head hunter is going to consider you unless you are in SG. Sorry to dash your hopes, it is just reality. Everyday people with experience working in finance are arriving in SG because they were layed-off in TKY, HK, NY, or LDN. They mistakenly believe they will be able to find a job. There...

Some good news ....

It looks like JPM, DB, and Citi all use the same career website engine, Taleo. So once you figure it out for one, the other two should be a breeze. PM me as I will be in SG in about 10 days and would not mind to meet another American. Also, SMS hopefully no offence taken on the meet recruiter->need ...

YankStuckinSuiss don't give up hope yet.

I have noticed two things for financial IT jobs in SG: there is an uptick in job adverts, and the headhunters in SG are terrible (they are worse then the ones in Japan). The best websites I have seen recently are: efinancialcareers.com and recruit.net. There is a new trend in that many of the Financ...

Mobile Phone Questions

All, I would like to buy a cheap, pre-paid mobile phone for the first month or two I am in SG. After the second month, purchase a new phone (and phone number)and a post-paid plan. My plan is to keep the pre-paid cheap phone for when friends and family visit. I do realize I may loose credits and may ...

curiousgeorge, Thanks for the reply. I have indeed read your blog. It is what made me think of shipping.... I guess I wanted to see if the price difference between buying in SG was in the same ball park for buying in Japan + shipping costs + fees and taxes. While I would really really like to have a...

Expat Clubs/Associations worth it?

All, I'm being transfered to SG. At some of my previous postings, belonging to a Club made my time in-country much easier. SG has numerous Clubs/Associations (SG American/British club, many Country/Golf/Tennis clubs). I would like to hear everyones' opinions of these places. Are they good value or n...
