Thanks, JR8 and am really happy to know that there are many kindred souls who feel the same way. And I guess if you're blind you will at least be spared seeing this abhorring scene. Also, methinks it is best that I stop this discourse now lest I open a Pandora's box (again).

My apologies. I just joined the forum a month or so ago and just saw the thread so I'm sorry if it's no longer of contemporary interest. But I do have some strong views on the topic hence the posting-it's not to 'stir the pot' but just to add to the discourse..

I’ve been following this thread with interest and am a little saddened by the fact that it seems to have degenerated into a polarized polemic pitting expats against locals. Surely the overall idea of the Forum is to bring people together and not to engage in pointless argument and name-calling. At t...

Like the others, this is the first time I've heard about SPSF or contribution in lieu of CPF for foreigners. I suspect that "some do, most don't" is probably true and it might be that this additional benefit is more common in the private sector? It certainly was never mentioned in my negotiations (I...

I really appreciate all these responses to my earlier questions. Based on these I have formulated some plan of action. Initial enthusiasm of moving to a great place gets quickly dampened if one realizes that you have been short changed or not received a fair deal.. especially so if pay is not unifo...

Places with live oldies music (60's and 70's)

Anyone out there know of places (clubs, pubs, lounges) where they have live music with a focus on oldies songs from the 60's and 70's? I'm referring to singers/bands like the Shadows, Cliff Richard, Roy Orbison, Elvis, the Bee Gees, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Searchers,...

Thanks, Biomarker. The salary range you mentioned of between 8k-20k seems about right. Also fully agree with you about Singapore having this vibrant energy and commitment with a talented pool of researhers at all levels. Another important difference, especially when compared to some neighbouring cou...

Sorry, forgot to add one more KPI and this is the one linked to ADMINISTRATIVE contributions, i.e. serving on various School/Faculty/Departmental committees, and inter-School committees, on various issues not necessarily related or confined to just research.

On the question about KPI's: I have not relocated as yet so cannot give you concrete examples but in preliminary discussions with my future institution, the KPI's seem quite standard for research more generally, and is in place in most institutions outside Singapore. PUBLICATIONS remain as the only ...

Just to add some additional thoughts after reflecting about my first posting and reading the other responses: 1. Explore additional benefits: there may be additional 'perks' you can negotiate for and explore, which could increase your earning power significantly. For example, the institution I'm joi...

I have a background in biomedical and health research and have just negotiated a relocation to Singapore to an academic institutio, but perhaps at a more senior level than you (I have >30 yrs experience). Let me try to answer some of your questions: 1. Not sure of the answer but presumably the more ...

Dismay with Singapore salaries

I can concur with some of the information already posted. Having recently negotiated a relocation to Singapore I had to accept about a 30-35% reduction in salary compared to what I was earning previously in western Europe. But it is all relative: after comparing to what others are getting in Singapo...
