Singaporean words - pronounced differently to how it's spelt

So far I have discovered from taxi drivers... Tampines - is pronounced 'tam-pee-nees' Bedok - is pronouced 'bh-dok', not 'bee-dok' as I thought. I believe 'Chang yi' Airport is pronounced differently too. Can someone please enlighten me. Please share any more words like the above, that comes to mind...

Sorry to post such a silly question but I am not sure what to do. I've noticed that everyone (whether it be delivery man, helper, or a guest) in Singapore removes their shoes before entering our home. Maid's room = bomb shelter, is this normal in Singapore?

We cannot afford an extra bedroom for the maid. However the agent tells us that many people have their maid sleep in the bomb shelter. Is this true? We are new to Singapore and have no experience with a live-in helper. thanks.
