I'd tend to suggest buying off the Dell website (as much as I dislike Dell) .. they have budget machines from S$949 to S$1249 (you could probably do an interest free repayment depending on your card). I usually stock up when I'm out of the country - down in NZ next week for a couple of weeks so I can have a nose around (haven't seen a toffee crisp for ages). My sister sticks a box of chocolates and Tayto crisps in the post every few months. Seem to be the only reliable option :)

I use emusic.com, doesn't carry chart stuff but I've found quite a lot of stuff I like there and have broadened my tastes a bit. Think you should be able to browse and see if you like what's there. It's subscription based.
