Re: FT Working Parents and No Helper Advice

@BBCWatcher - I think that's what we're going to do. We found a local day care very near us that has spots open now. We met them this morning. We actually quite liked it and may stick with it, but we're also waitlisting at some of the usual western places that everyone recommends too. (Though, I'm s...

Re: FT Working Parents and No Helper Advice

That's what I keep hearing, but I'm not sure what makes being in Singapore much different from being back in the States, where I would never have live-in help. Possibly the availability and access to other forms of child care? One avenue that I've had some luck with is simply wandering around local ...

FT Working Parents and No Helper Advice

Hi Parents, My wife and I are both working full time and have a 2.5 month old son at home. I've just returned to work and my wife will be returning in the next few weeks. We also just recently decided to let our live-in helper go (long story, but we just value our privacy more than the convenience a...

Re: Help with setting up house rules for a helper

Thanks everyone, for the thoughtful input! I really do appreciate it. We will likely take a slightly different approach than most, focusing our search on older, more experienced transfer helpers at the higher end of the usual budget with the hope that they'll be need less micromanaging, especially i...

Help with setting up house rules for a helper

Hey guys, my wife and I are expecting a child and we're planning on hiring a live-in helper. I've been reading a lot about helpers in Singapore (here and elsewhere) and have a very good understanding of all the legal stuff and process. What I'm having trouble with is the more nuanced parts of living...

Re: Recommendations for Lively Neighborhoods

Tiong Bahru Chinatown Bukit Timah Geylang (tongue in cheek, I'm guessing, but I've heard good things!) Little India All those make sense to me, but what am I missing in Holland Village? I spent some time here a few weeks ago and didn't really love it. It felt pretty suburban to me. Lots of condos an...

Recommendations for Lively Neighborhoods

Hey guys, I know neighborhood recommendation asks come up frequently. I've done a lot of reading and I've done a lot of walking around Singapore. Wanted to provide as much information as possible to ask you locals... am I missing anything obvious? My wife and I are from New York City, so we're used ...

Re: Taxi or private car for daily booking

I know this is an old thread, but for anyone else looking (or in case you are still looking)... Uber is perfect for this, especially if your teen has a smartphone. Put Uber on their phone, link it to your credit card. They can arrange their own rides as needed and no cash is ever exchanged. Plus, yo...

Re: ANY TIPS ON HOW TO PAY USA TAXES IN SINGAPORE

FYI for anyone looking at Transferwise, which I've seen recommended a few times here... they only allow SGD transfers within Singapore financial institutions. I reached out to them directly to confirm. So they aren't a viable option for moving SGD to US-based banks.

Re: ANY TIPS ON HOW TO PAY USA TAXES IN SINGAPORE

Unsure. I'm a yank and have been living here for 33 years, but I still maintain 2 US credit cards and one US bank account just for those reasons of convenience. Not to hijack the thread, but I plan on doing the same.. keeping a US credit card that I really love (Chase Sapphire Preferred) because it...

Re: Cree LED Lightbulbs

Hrm. Interesting. Not worth the trouble to me, though.

Are LED (not incandescent or florescent) bulbs easy to come by at SG retailers?

Re: Cree LED Lightbulbs

I'm in New York City for the next few weeks. Relocating to Sydney in September for 5 months and then SG permanently after that.

I'll probably just sell them here on Craig's List before we go. I'll leave the ones I put the apartment's fixtures for the next tenants and good environmental karma.

Re: Cree LED Lightbulbs

Thanks Eagle. Makes sense. Knew about the voltage, but wasn't sure about the bulbs themselves. Interesting to know it's a different sized socket too. So much for that investment in all those LED bulbs!

Cree LED Lightbulbs

Hey guys, searched (here and elsewhere), but couldn't find a clear answer. Does anyone know if Cree LED lightbulbs acquired in the US would work in Singapore?

Do US lightbulbs in general work in Singapore?
