Questioning the credibility of some people years ago on the same topic doesn't change the data now, people aren't always right or wrong but it's hard to dispute facts, if we can establish them. That's a tricky situation - I have not heard of applications being a potential drawback, but in this case it would seem to be an obvious pattern of coming in and out, which would explain why my friends on short-term visas do it that way.
