Everyone needs a company stamp in Singapore. It's a bit of a relic, but that just adds character to doing business here compared to other countries.

The Singaporean govt is generally very supportive of many of these current schemes. You should get networking in industry events as opposed to relying much on what anyone says in these forums.

Most people including expats don't get the art scene.

Angel investors don't generally invest the same levels as VCs. Angels generally are from about 20k to about $1 million. VCs are much bigger players and usually come in after proof of concept or later into the picture. They would invest much more than $1 million. There is an angel investor group here...

There a lots of businesses opportunities around thesedays.

I would say that you have to work out your motivations. To be your own boss is a big one. Other thing is to decide if the business you start can be scalable. A noodle shop is unlikely to be whereas software is a different proposition.

Sometimes it can be easier to buy an existing business. Singapore has a few of them but in Phuket there are quite a few less than US$50K. The smallest investment is probably Cambodia where some places are only US$20k for a bar but that lifestyle is not for everyone :) Lots of businesses US$1 million...

Looking to hear other opinions about Dubai as a place for business as opposed to Singapore. Dubai seems to be really booming at the moment and is attracting plenty of expats and new business. Seeing quite a few leaving Singapore to move to Dubai at the moment. No income tax at all seems a real plus....
