Sapphire--Thanks for your post. I don't know the why of the cachet of UWC either: I just got off the phone with a brother-in-law who lived in Singapore for years, and he was full of praise for UWC (but also for OFS) in terms of the experience of his friends who had children in schools there. Our onl...

rnt--I wouldn't send 'Master Artursson' to Hopkins on a bet; maybe you meant Hotchkiss? Luckily, we aren't much concerned about curriculum or anything else: just MA's happiness in whichever school we ultimately find for him. He'll be able to swim in any sea he returns to in US. We just want him to l...

raika--thanks for your information. Meanwhile I've been in correspondence
with another academic who raised two children in Singapore, and sent them to UWC and SAS; he liked OFS, too. So subject to the waiting list concern, we may see you at Paterson Road on August 8 for orientation day!

banana--I don't know about the other places you cite regarding racism, but as for Harlem: you're easily ten years out of date. Still seven weeks from touchdown in Singapore, I'm shocked, I say shocked, at the absence of 'lifelike dildos' there! Actually, most dildos I've seen on display in the sexsh...

Thanks for the thumbs-up, Levikane. SMS--so the lunar new year is when, exactly? Thanks for the shopping/scrounging tips. My wife will hate you for them, but that's OK. Better she hates you than me.

Later. Surfing thru other threads on the forum, I begin to understand a bit the bitchy reception I complained about in the previous post. If my questions were perceived as bragging about some imagined insiderness, that was the contrary of my intention. I'm still essentially clueless about the school...

SMS, jpat--You've made my day! Thanks a lot. Actually, with all the expats surging in and out of the place, I'm surprised that Singapore doesn't have an exchange dedicated to the used furniture of the upwardly mobile. Or does it, in fact? Maybe something to look into as a part time venture once we'v...

Um, "other than IKEA." That slur. Wasn't that a slur? I actually love IKEA myself; bought some cabinet hardware in the New Haven store a couple of hours for the house I'm trying to sell. I do acknowledge that the flakeboard is flimsy, the upholstery is crap, and the lighting, except for the undercab...

Good Lord, what have I wandered into here? Road-not-taken, it's irresistible to tell you to fork off. Do you imagine that Singapore, of all places, isn't set up such that a certain number of spots aren't set aside in EVERY sought-after situation to keep the government happy? How, in any analysis, is...

What's up with the slur on IKEA? Can the product be even worse in Singapore than in US? I mean, all the stuff comes from Asia, right?

rnt--I have a beloved iMac, too, and I'm glad to read your post about local Apple doing a 240 conversion. Any recollection of cost? We're going to try to shoehorn all such needs into our reloc allowance. Thanks much!

The president of my wife's institution advises that we should stick with the international schools, and promises to "have a word with the Minister" to see us around any problem with waitlists. That may just be bravado, but in the event: TTS or UWC? If you have current experience of either or both of...

responses to gracious replies

As I noted above, we will be in Singapore on a three year contract; after that probably back to New York, but a two year stint in Tokyo is possible. In that light, can you tell me what my wild assumptions might be? Regarding the deposit issue, OFS seems to depend for part of its enrollment on famili...
