Re: Black American Women

Hi TexasBrown,

I'm African American. I also know one or two others living here. Occasionally I meet some who are on a stopover and work for the US army. But besides that, not many.

Hi stacey we have a maid room in our condo (Tropical Spring in Simei). The surface area in the room is about 1.5 meters x 1.5 meters. So it is great if your maid is short. There is a combined toilet/shower next to the room. But judging from the 'standing area' in this toilet/shower, they expected th...

I am African-American, my hubby is from Finland. I do think people here stare more than what would be considered appropriate in the 'States. But sometimes I stare them back;-) Besides people did stare us in some places in the U.S. as well (more in the southern States). In Finland I often got not-so-...

Actually newer HDB flats do not seem that different from apartments in Scandinavia or Western Europe in general. When we moved between countries due to my husbands job (in Netherlands, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland) the flats that we stayed in also did not have the amenities such as a gym or swimm...

Just tell the agent that at no point do you exclusively engage him/her as your agent so you aren't liable to pay any fees. He can claim his fees from the Landlord! yes this is what we were going to do but I wanted to know what are the possibilities after the letter of intent has been signed? I doub...

Not if rental is over $2.5k, no commission if you don't engage an agent exclusively! We have this situation where we just found a condo in Simei (Tropical Spring complex). The whole complex is rather clean (built in 2003), close to the MRT and the shops at the East Point Mall. The rent on the apart...

"house rules"

We are supposed to be moving from Switzerland at the end October, so I would like to know if the apartment complexes or condos have any "house rules". For example, no toilet flushing after 10pm or using the washing machine on Sundays.

We have not yet arrived in Singapore as my hubby's start date has not been finalized. But I am concerned about rents and potential increases to rents so here are a couple of questions. A. If we sign a one year contract on an apartment, can the landlord increase the rent, let's say, after 6 months in...

Africans and african-americans in Singapore

As my husband was offered a position in Singapore, I have been looking for whether there is some way to get my hair permed every so often, without having to do it myself. I have noticed that these were discussed on another thread so I think this won't be a problem. Other related issues that I was cu...

room sizes (particularly bedroom) in Singapore

Hi all wanted to ask a question about bedroom sizes in apartments in Singapore. When we lived in Australia we purchased a bedroom set where the mattress size is about 2m x 2m. Together with the nightstands, the width of this is nearly 3m. I was wondering whether we would be able to find a bedroom in...

looking at Google maps it seems like Skudai is directly next beside JB. Doesn't look like it could be that different from JB itself?

Expat commuting to work from Johor Bahru

I was reading through some of the posting about the Singapore apartment market here and noticed a mention of someone planning to move to Johor Bahru. In some other discussion thread someone was telling about how unpractical, in general, it is to commute from Malaysia every morning. What I was curiou...

How about dogs?

I would like to know how common is it that landlords allow dogs? Not that we have any, we have just been contemplating of getting one for our daughter.
