I agreed with keeping it simple. They will know what is going on very soon as nowsday kids are smart...they know a lot of things that we normally don't at our old days.
It would be quite a challenge to see GPS work in Singapore as there are too many high rise building around. Most GPS don't work well if it is in CBD, same here in AUstralia.
You should try Australia instead, a lot of place for you to dive and surf. If you get use to Japan, you may not get use to Singapore, in term of technology and culture..
