Did the computer guy explained further to you why it's beyond recovery?
Was it due to a mechanical failure?
How old is the HD?
Do you have the brand, model and size (especially spaced used)?
Are you prepared to send it for data recovery servicing if the price is
affordable?
I wouldn't advise the novice user to do a reinstall - you may reset the password but also all system files, data and apps. The way I do it (the expert way ahem) has no such risks. It involves tweaking the registry and under 5 mins, you'll be back in business!
