Is " Ang Moh " expats getting lesser in Singapore?

back in good old days 80s early 90s. I noticed quite a lot " Ang Moh " expats staying in Singapore. Later come late 90s, suddenly spike of PRC, CECA , Pinyo. Than around mid 2000 come Vietnamese. Now fast forward currently 2025, I kinda see " Ang Mo " expats staying in Singapore instead, PRC, Pinyo and Vietnamese quite a lot likewise for CECA.

" No offence to any one " Just curious these changes seem happen in Singapore.

for those don't now what is " Ang Moh " , (in Singapore English) a white person.

Side note one thing interesting, I noticed Black Americans or perhaps from France , EU or South Africa too in Singapore but still quite low.

I think you're right...I see more PRC, Filipinos and Vietnamese, notably PRC can spot them when they speak

I worked for a couple of MNCs and seem like expat packages are rarer too, whereas for PRCs/Filipinos/Vietnamese etc the wage difference is still very attractive.

This is why perhaps getting lesser compare back in 80/90s.

Definitely. The ang moh hangouts are getting crowded with none ang moh. The cricket club is a good example. I don't mind by the ways.

Before I left my employer, we still had plenty of ang moh expats, no noticeable reduction, though it has ebbed and flowed over the years. For example, we saw big reductions during Covid, but then new ones came back post-Covid.

What is more noticeable is the reduction in the number of true blue Singaporeans over the decades, replaced mostly by Malaysian Chinese (at least half being citizen converts).

To a lesser degree, I saw a lot of Hong Kong Chinese in the nineties (pre-handover, and fast tracked to citizenship), and then mainlanders in the naughties. However, the Malaysian Chinese seem lower caliber talent on average, but this is expected considering the lower bar.

I guess my kids being born in Singapore could one day join the ever shrinking population of Singapore-born Singaporeans.

You're right, sadly, local singaporeans seem to be shrinking and I see mostly PRCs everywhere..seems like they're more than Singaporean chinese now..

What gets my goat is that staff increasingly only speaks mandarin these days. I start off in English try Malay, even throw in a bit of hokkien to check for a glimmer of recognition. But more often than not, they'll just "meo, meo" and call for someone else to come and serve me.

I think mostly PRCs working...Local Chinese usually can speak some basic English. Hawker centre and food centre nowadays, sell mostly mala food, no wonder my tastebuds have been accustoming to Mala food.

From what I have observed —
Chinese restaurants: mostly PRC staff.
Western restaurants: mostly Filipino staff.
It’s rare to find locals in these jobs.

In the U.S. it’s a mixed bag, but you can find locals in these jobs because wait staff can make six figures annually with USD20/hour+20% tips. Good for them, bad for customers. Just one main dish typically costs USD14-24 before tax and tips, and it’s not like the old days where one main dish was enough to feed two people. Shrinkflation is real. Taco Bell still has the best prices with a cheesy double beef burrito going for $2.99.

One place serving Chinese food here (that we frequent) uses what looks like washing machines to cook the food, and it’s got a bunch of sauce containers integrated into it… they said their goal is to fully automate the entire restaurant. The food is surprisingly good, reasonably priced and quite authentic… nearly all of my in-laws have tried it and agree.
