As a former Chinese tutor (taught a Vietnamese) and a Singaporean Chinese with a good Chinese accent (lots of people asked if I'm from China ), I'd say it's near-impossible (possible but bloody difficult) to actually learn how to speak Mandarin over MSN!

Yes you can teach the hanyupinyin and the numerical connotations but it doesn't bring you very far in terms of proper pronunciation. Unless you have webcam and microphone...that'll be totally different.

But purely by IM-ing on MSN...trust me, the learning progress is zilch.

but I don't think you are exactly right.

by MSN, I believe the person who want to learn Mandarin will get help from me, and my english aslo can get help from them.that is the most important.

as for how much help we can get ,It will depend on our cooperation .

Really sorry. Had to go out real early and i just got back. Anyways, Skype is another program much similar to MSN or Yahoo Messenger. Except it's better. Because It allows you to call people up on the internet and talk to them if you have a microphone or headphone with mic.

I'll send you an email about it. It's really good and easy to download. Don't need much to run on your PC.
