I must enter this thread to bring you a touch of french flair !

The worst :
1982, half-final, France vs FRG, we missed out our 1st final.
An unbelievable and violent attack from the german goalkeeper, and at the end of the game, we lose though we should win because we were leading 3-1 20min before the end.
1986 : the french should have taken their revenge, but we missed it out again (what a traumatism against the german, another one)

the best :
1986 : quarter final, France vs Brazil, a great game, 2 great teams, a great mexican ambiance and a dramatic end for Brazil.
1998 : WE WON !!!!!!!! and another dramatic end for Brazil

Brazil just need a draw to go to the next round, and Brazil was playing much much better, with dozens of attacks against Italy... But then 1 Italian player appeared that day. Brazil was playing as nothing has happened. I think we forgot that "hey..we do not need to attack anymore. We are in the next fase already." This same italian guy got 3 chances, and scored 3 goals. Rossi sent Italy to the semifinals in one of the all-time great games of World Cup history against the (probably) the best Brazilian squad ever.

Well, 24 years later, we now have another chance. The actual team has everything to be the best Brazilian squad ever, and for the first time we will be playing 3-3-4 ( aka 'quadrado magico' )

Yes, Tony has a bit of a temper. If you are fair, however (funny thing to ask of a Ducthie), you will see that ALL goalkeepers lunge feet and knees first.
In virtually every case the striker takes heed and moves - in this case the player was thick as a brick and kept going - right into the raised knees of Tony. Not a nice play from Tony at all, but completely standard practise for goalies - have a look at your van der Saar the next game in the same situation.
Actually Tony caught some flack for that at home - rightly so - it is dangerous play and should not be allowed - outfield players get booked for that, why not goalkeepers?! Tony should have been sent off the pitch.

The French team has almost always underperformed, which is a shame as a few sides have had superb players.

Well, Brazilians are very supertitious with world cups.
1 - we NEVER say: we will win this worldcup

2 - we believe the best teams always get eliminated.

so...I hope we do a good presentation

( and Argentina gets eliminated, of course )

By your youthful looks you probably are not old enough to have seen the Brazilian squad 1970 in action. That team was not too bad either, and it was a winning team. My all time favourite.

So folks, who do you think are the players that can provide the flair and racing heartbeats as those back in the 70s and early 80s?

I'm guessing Ronaldhino, probably a couple of African players and just maybe...Jans Lehman for some reason.

Just silly things like save penalties, dive left and right and not just rely on being close to 7foot tall.

Messi, maybe but do look at Ballack, Gerrard and more attacking midfield players - - - this will be the World Cup of midfielders making their field-long runs and either scoring themselves or threading picture perfect passes for the strikers to score.

Ronaldo. No matter what happened in 1998 and between the World Cups, this man has a unique chance to become one of the greatest players of all time. Stakes are high, though: Will he be able to lead Brazil to another World Cup win and will he eclipse Gerd Mueller's legendary 14 goals in World Cups? I have some doubts, but it will definitely be interesting to watch.
