Any expat consider HDB?

The link shows a floor plan of the older style of 3room HDB Flats. This is likely what your relative has. A 3-room flat is actually a 2 BR Flat with a Hall (the kitchen doesn't count). The oldest types did not have the Utility area as shown on the back of the kitchen area on this plan.

I have a 5-room flat which can be a 3BR, 3.5BR (or 3BR & 1Den) or 4BR (mine).

I don't think the flat is that old - they just prefer to use it as income and live in a condo. They are currently living in it having moved out of the condo they rented about 6 months ago (Maplewoods at Bukit Timah) and are waiting for the new one they're buying to be finished.

I've had several cousins buy HDB flats just because they can and even leave them empty until they can legally rent them out.

Me personally, I never had the best experience with a HDB. First their was the ah long coming around spraypainting O$P$ on the door and walls at night, then there was the windows which were of really poor quality and then all the stares this 6ft 7 Ang Moh used to get every time he walked around the place with his local girlfriend/wife. Just wasn't my cup of tea although I admit, the prospect of buying a nice HDB and then putting 50-100k into interior decoration is tempting now that we are planning on moving back. The thought of neighbours burning incents and noisy weddings on the void deck etc however straight away convince me again to move into a condo.

PS: Tammy, I am also living in East London, in a newly developed estate at the Royal Docks. Have to admit that even the darkest HDB corner is still a gazillion times safer than East London.

I think you are all right. I am just freaking myself out. My company has put me in a Serviced Apartment for 4 weeks, so I should just use that time to to find somewhere I feel comfortable with rather than panic.

The locals keep their hdb flats as a form of financial security esp. true for those who run their own businesses. Both hdb flat and cpf savings are protected assets where creditors can't touch as in the case of bankruptcy. It make sense that your cousins are keeping theirs.
